Barnsley suffered their second away defeat in succession last night as Birmingham City proved to be too strong for Daniel's Stendel's side.

The Tykes, who could have moved into the top half of the Championship standings with a victory over the Blues, only recorded one shot on target in what was a tepid display at St Andrew's.

Following an even first-half, Birmingham managed to take control of the clash in the second period and eventually opened the scoring in the 69th minute via a Lukas Jutkiewicz header.

Although Stendel tried to alter the shape of the game by bringing on Mallik Wilks and Patrick Schmidt, the Blues sealed all three points in the 77th minute as Alvaro Gimenez fired in his first goal for Pep Clotet's side.

Given that his side have now failed to win in their last four competitive outings, Stendel will be wanting to see his players deliver a response to what was an underwhelming display last night when they host Luton Town at Oakwell on Saturday.

With the dust having now settled from the club's clash with the Blues, here are three things we learnt about the Tykes in their defeat at St Andrew's...

They are starting to really miss Kieffer Moore

Having sold last season's top-scorer Kieffer Moore earlier this summer, Barnsley would have been hoping that by bringing in the likes of Conor Chaplin and Schmidt, they would not necessarily miss the forward.

However, considering that the Tykes have only managed to fire in three goals in five games in all competitions, it could be argued that they are struggling somewhat up-front.

Although there is a great deal of football left to play this season, if Barnsley continue to falter in an attacking sense they may have to address this issue in the January transfer window.

The Championship is proving to be extremely unforgiving

Whereas Barnsley have produced some promising signs in the Championship during the opening weeks of the 2019/20 campaign, the fact that they have only managed to amass a total of four points from 12 illustrates just how unforgiving this league can be.

Having had to settle for a draw last weekend against Charlton Athletic at Oakwell after the visitors scored a last minute equaliser, the Tykes were punished for not performing at their maximum by Birmingham yesterday.

In order to learn from these two recent clashes, the club's players will have to work hard in training to ensure that they have the best chance of maintaining consistency throughout an entire game.

Toby Sibbick may have to be benched for Saturday's clash

A summer arrival from AFC Wimbledon, there were high hopes for Toby Sibbick at Barnsley going into the season as he produced a number of impressive displays in League One during the previous campaign.

However, the full-back has struggled to adapt to the Championship and was left wanting at times last night against Birmingham.

Therefore, taking Sibbick's recent performances into consideration, it may be worth Stendel benching him for Dimitri Cavare who was a mainstay in Barnsley's starting eleven last season.
