An 80th minute Josh Laurent equaliser prevented Barnsley from going to within two points of escaping the Championship relegation places yesterday afternoon.

Carlton Morris opened the scoring for the Tykes after just five minutes, with the 26-year-old netting his third goal in his last five Championship outings.

Sitting five points below the Royals with seven games left to play, it continues to look like a difficult task for the Yorkshire club, but something that remains achievable.

Here, we take a look at three things we learnt about the Tykes yesterday afternoon...

Defensive resilience was there for all to see once more

With Michal Helik sidelined, Liam Kitching came into the side once more and impressed next to Mads Andersen, with Barnsley's defensive performances this season not justifying a spot in the relegation zone.

Ensuring they remain defensively compact could be key in what remains of this campaign, especially with confidence growing in the final third.

Reading looked dangerous on a few occasions yesterday, however, they were more often than not met by a Barnsley defender who managed to prevent goalscoring opportunities.

Carlton Morris could be key

Scoring the fewest goals in the Championship this season, the creation and the conversion of chances has been an issue this season.

Perhaps eased slightly by the additions of Domingos Quina and Amine Bassi, whilst certainly bolstered by the recent form shown by Carlton Morris.

Morris has proven to be an important scorer of goals in recent weeks and his ability to continue to find the back of the net could be pivotal as they try to escape the Championship drop.

Continuing to be difficult to beat at home

The Tykes made it a sixth game in succession at Oakwell where they have avoided defeat, with their home form something that could help them avoid the drop.

However, it is only three of their remaining seven games that come at their Yorkshire home.

The Yorkshire club welcome Peterborough United, Blackpool and Preston North End to Oakwell in the concluding stages of this season, with all three of those winnable.
