Aston Villa booked their place at Wembley with a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over West Brom on Tuesday evening.

The Villans fell behind in the first-half, with Craig Dawson heading home from a throw in to give the Baggies a surprise lead on the day.

Jimmy Shan's side had the better of the chances, but the game-changing moment came when West Brom captain, Chris Brunt was dismissed for a second bookable offence after a foul on John McGinn.

But Villa struggled to make their man advantage count during extra time, and the game went to spot kicks.

Villa goalkeeper, Jed Steer saved from both Mason Holgate and Ahmed Hegazi, and Tammy Abraham cooly slotted home the winning penalty for the Villans.

They now will be focusing on their trip to Wembley, where they will face either Leeds United or Derby County, as they face off tonight in the other semi-final.

But what have we learnt about Dean Smith's side from this game?

Find out below....

They rode their luck at times

You have to say that it was West Brom that had the better of the chances during the 90 minutes, and the Baggies would have deserved to win the tie in normal time.

But Brunt's red card certainly changed the game in Aston Villa's favour, and West Brom will be made to rue a number of missed opportunities to take the lead on aggregate on the day.

The injuries will be a concern

Both Axel Tuanzebe and Tammy Abraham both struggled with injuries throughout the game, and that will be a huge concern heading into Villa's biggest game of the season.

Dean Smith needs his key players fit for the final, and the pair definitely fall into that category.

They'll be desperate to be in the best shape possible heading into such an important game.

John McGinn is a player to rely on for the Villans

West Brom nullified the threat posed by Jack Grealish throughout the match on Tuesday evening, but they struggled to cope with John McGinn.

The Scotsman's energy and direct style of play was a real asset to Villa on the day, and he's going to be aiming to cap off an excellent debut season in English football with promotion to the Premier League.
