Gary Rowett has found his formation
After initially using the traditional 4-4-2 formation for the opening two matches of the season – which saw the Rams draw at Sunderland and lose to Wolves – Rowett has set out his team differently in their last two games and it’s brought 2 wins from 2.
For the victories over Preston North End and Bolton Wanderers, Derby have played the 4-2-3-1 formation, with Matej Vydra playing behind experienced frontman David Nugent.
The formation has worked so far, as Derby have created more chances and have been an all-round better side in their last couple of outings – albeit against arguably easier opposition.
If the Rams do keep picking up points, then it’s unlikely Rowett will switch the shape of the team around from the one he’s using now.
