On Saturday afternoon, Derby picked up their second consecutive win of the season, beating Bolton Wanderers in their own backyard to move up to eighth in the table.

The Rams dominated the first half and it took them just eight minutes to break the deadlock as David Nugent opened his account for the season with a goal to put Gary Rowett's side 1-0 up.

13 minutes later, some great work from Johnny Russell on the right flank allowed him to cross the ball into the Trotters box where Nugent could nod the ball home from close range to double the Rams' lead.

Derby perhaps should've had a greater lead going in at half time, with Matej Vydra and Andre Wisdom both coming close to getting their name on the scoresheet, but 2-0 was the scoreline at the interval.

Bolton looked a little better in the second 45, however the damage was already done and a late Gary Madine consolation wasn't enough to spoil the day for the travelling Derby supporters.

Here's THREE things we learned from the game...

Gary Rowett has found his formation

After initially using the traditional 4-4-2 formation for the opening two matches of the season - which saw the Rams draw at Sunderland and lose to Wolves - Rowett has set out his team differently in their last two games and it's brought 2 wins from 2.

For the victories over Preston North End and Bolton Wanderers, Derby have played the 4-2-3-1 formation, with Matej Vydra playing behind experienced frontman David Nugent.

The formation has worked so far, as Derby have created more chances and have been an all-round better side in their last couple of outings - albeit against arguably easier opposition.

If the Rams do keep picking up points, then it's unlikely Rowett will switch the shape of the team around from the one he's using now.

It could be Matej Vydra's year

Matej Vydra joined Derby last summer from a club record fee of £8m, but didn't hit it off in his opening campaign in a Rams shirt.

The Czech forward scored just 6 goals for Derby last season, as new boss Steve McClaren favoured Darren Bent up top over him, before Rowett restored him to the first team.

Vydra is a proven goal scorer at Championship level, and given a run in the team, could be an influential part of the Rams' season, just like he was when he helped Watford to promotion in 2014/15.

The 25-year-old has linked up well with David Nugent in his last two matches, and if both players can show consistency, that could be a lethal partnership to score goals in the second tier for Derby.

Bolton could be in for a long season

We're four games into the season now and Bolton are still yet to record their first win of the campaign.

Of course there's still a long way to go but Phil Parkinson's men haven't been brilliant and could struggle if they continue in the same vein of form.

Unlike other clubs, Bolton can't buy the solution to their problems due to the financial status of the club, so it's going to take a lot of hard work on the training pitch to improve the Trotters' form.

The aim for Bolton this season is solely to stay up, as they were never going to be pushing for a play-off place, but if they do want to avoid relegation straight back to League One, they will have to perform better than they have so far during the rest of the season.
