Wolves take on Ipswich Town at Molineux today with one side needing the points more than the other.

It's been a disappointing season for Wolves who had an excellent season last year, coming agonisingly short of the play-offs in seventh. Most fans thought it was an outstanding achievement as it was their first season back from League One, so fans wanted Kenny Jackett to add some players in the summer and go for it this season.

But instead the opposite happened, and everything that made Wolves click was sold off, including star striker Benik Afobe, who scored 13 goals in half a season after signing in January on a permanent for Arsenal.

His excellent partnerships with fellow star Bakary Sako and Nouha Dicko were destroyed. Sako refused to sign a new contract and left for Premier League Crystal Palace, whilst Dicko suffered a bad injury at the start of the season which has kept him out since.

Wolves had a good defence with Dominic Iorfa emerging as a star at right-back, whilst Richard Stearman and Scott Golborne consolidated the back four, but Stearman was sold to Fulham. Their defence has been awful this season, with the experienced Mike Williamson brought in to help it out.

Haphazard replacements for their star strikers have not paid off, with Adam Le Fondre and Joe Mason not firing, but George Saville has been good in midfield.

Wolves sit 12th and their performances are improving, with a great point away to Burnley last week relieving the pressure on Jackett. They want to end with a flourish and rebuild for next season.

Ipswich have been so consistent under Mick McCarthy and they have gone very much under the radar this season.

They lost Tyrone Mings to Bournemouth in the summer, but replaced him with Jonas Knudsen, and their squad is still of cheap build. But they consistently finish in the top six as they look to push for the play-offs and they currently sit eighth, just four points outside the top six.

Daryl Murphy was the top scorer last season in the Championship but took a while to get going this round, but he has now and will look to improve in the run-in.

Brett Pitman and Ryan Fraser have assisted him well, and their defensive solidarity is getting better with Christophe Berra returning to form.

Their home defeat to Rotherham United before the international break was damaging though, and they must find form again if they are to make top six.

FootballLeagueWorld writer Michael Hasan identifies THREE things to look out for in today's game...

1) Ipswich consistency

Ipswich haven't strung two wins together all year, and this lack of consistency must be worrying for manager McCarthy.

A impressive display at home to Blackburn Rovers set them up for a charge on the play-offs, but they lost to a resurgent Rotherham at home the following week, and their home form is a lot worse than it was last season.

Ipswich have taken advantage of the sides around them being sloppy too, but McCarthy is famous for kicking his side into gear for the run-in and victory today would be a good start.

Ipswich haven't won an away game for a while but they must get started soon.

2) Wolves improvement

As previously stated, Wolves have had a very disappointing season, selling their best players and failing to replace them.

They have not been in the promotion picture all season, and there has been a lot of pressure on Jackett for not delivering after last season's success.

No natural goalscorer at the club means their top scorer is James Henry in midfield, but recent form suggests their home form is getting better.

A good win over Derby County and strong performances against Birmingham City and Bristol City has lifted them up to 12th as they look to finish with a flourish.

3) Daryl Murphy

The man to watch is undoubtedly Ipswich veteran striker Murphy, who scored 27 goals last season and was nominated for Championship Player of the Year.

He led Ipswich to the play-offs with the help of strike partners David McGoldrick and Freddie Sears, but were beaten by Norwich City in the semi finals.

He took some time to get going but is in form now and, with the help of Pitman and Fraser, they can give the Wolves backline, who struggled early in the season, many problems.
