Arguably the blockbuster game of the opening EFL weekend is being played at Hillsborough on Sunday, when play-off bridesmaids Sheffield Wednesday play host to relegated Aston Villa.

This game has the makings of a cracker.

Both teams endured disappointment at the end of their respective seasons last term, with Sheffield Wednesday missing out on a place in the Premier League at Wembley, and Aston Villa losing their Premier League status after accumulating a measly 17 points throughout the whole of their league campaign.

Both teams however have acquired extremely well this summer.

Wednesday have completed a double raid on two Premier League sides, signing Daniel Pudil and Almen Abdi from Watford on two and three-year deals respectively, and those two will combine with Will Buckley and Steven Fletcher who have arrived from Sunderland, the former on a loan deal.

On the other side of the equation, Aston Villa have also added to their squad with professionalism.

AFC Bournemouth captain Tommy Elphick has arrived on a three-year deal, former England Under-18 starlet Aaron Tshibola has moved north from Reading, and they've also secured the signature of arguably the best striker in the EFL, Ross McCormack.

Sunday will also be the first time that Roberto Di Matteo takes his side into a competitive situation, and what a game it should be.

Here, FootballLeagueWorld writer Jack Sharp identifies THREE things to look out for in the Sheffield Wednesday v Aston Villa encounter on Sunday...

1) A superb atmosphere

This game has the makings of a cracker, both on the pitch and off it.

It should be a sell-out crowd in Sheffield on Sunday, with both sets of fans doing their all to inspire their sides to the perfect start to the new campaign.

Both sets of fans are known for being vociferous and superb, and the summer business of both Wednesday and Villa would have done nothing to deflate either fanbase.

I'll be watching on the television, but part of me wishes I was there on Sunday afternoon - what an atmosphere it promises to be.

2) New signings

Both of these sides have made a plethora of signings this summer, but there's some I think you should be keeping a particular eye on.

From the Sheffield Wednesday side of it, Swiss star Abdi has the ability to terrorise any defence in the league, and the 29-year-old will surely be the focal point of any of Di Matteo's defensive tactical discussions leading up to the game.

Former loan singing Pudil has made his move to Sheffield a permanent one, and will be a constant menace to Villa on the left flank tomorrow afternoon. Also, experienced target-man and Scottish international Fletcher has arrived at the club on a permanent deal from Sunderland.

On the other side, be sure to look out for England Under-21 and now Villa starlet Tshibola, who has recently joined Aston Villa on a long-term deal from Championship rivals Reading.

Another name that will undoubtedly pop up during the game is Villa's new striker McCormack, who is renowned for his outstanding goalscoring prowess.

3) Young talent

Something this game is going to be full of is young talent, perhaps specifically that line-up for the away side.

The Owls have limited youth talent in their first team, perhaps the only young player in contention to play on Sunday is Portugese attacker Lucas João, who may get a chance to prove his worth to Carlos Carvalhal.

On the other side, Tshibola and Jack Grealish are two outstandingly gifted players, however both have become too accustomed to the treatment room after having terrible luck with injuries.

However both are now fully fit, and Sunday will perhaps be their prime time to prove themselves to new manager Di Matteo.
