One of the key clashes in the opening weekend of fixtures for the 2016/17 Championship season is the David versus Goliath clash between football icons Nottingham Forest, and division new comers Burton Albion.

The match will be new territory for both sides with Forest playing their first competitive match under new manager Philippe Montanier, and the Brewers will be playing their first competitive match at the second tier of English football.

Both teams have been busy over the summer transforming their squads in preparation for this coming season.

Forest will be keen to avoid the disappointment of a lower-mid table finish or worse this season, whereas Nigel Clough's side will simply be looking to consolidate their place in the division.

Beware of the Britt

assombalonga

Forest fans are pinning all their hopes this season on the fire power of front man Britt Assombalonga.

The former Peterborough striker scored 15 league goals in 29 matches for Forest in the 2014/15 season, but only made 4 appearances last season as he suffered a serious knee injury.

The 23 year old was a record signing for the club after he transferred from the Posh for a potential £8 million including add-ons surpassing the £4.5 million purchase of Pierre Van Hooijdonk from Celtic in 1997.

It was a positive end to the season when Assombalonga bagged his only goal of the campaign in a victory over MK Dons on 7th May, but after only hitting the net once in pre-season there are still question marks remaining over the impact his previous year-long lay-off through injury has had on his goal-scoring prowess.

Can Clough adapt to Championship life?

clough7

Burton fans were undoubtedly devastated when Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink departed the club for QPR last season, but when news filtered through that the man who guided them from the Conference National was to return to the helm, it improved their sombre mood.

Clough can take a huge amount of credit for playing his part in getting the Brewers to this level.

He got them promoted into the Football League back in 2009 during his first stint with the club, and continued the fine work of Hasselbaink by securing the runners-up spot in League One last season, to seal promotion to the Championship.

However, there are still doubts about Clough ability to manage at this level.

He endured a four year spell with Derby which saw him only manage to achieve a win ratio of 33.5% before he was sacked on 28th September, 2013 after a derby defeat to local rivals Nottingham Forest leaving the club in 14th place. Can he deliver the performances needed to keep Burton up this season?

Montanier to stick with flat back four

Philippe Montanier dd

This will be Montanier's first foray into English football and he is an unknown quantity.

He has experience of guiding a team from the second tier into the first tier of their national league when he took French side US Boulogne from Ligue 2 to Ligue 1 back in 2009. Can he replicate that success in the Championship?

Forest's pre-season under Montanier has shown signs of encouragement. Their 3-0 win over Portuguese club Braga being the highlight with their second half performance in the 2-1 defeat to Premier League side Hull City also proof of progress being made on the pitch.

One of the key factors in Forest's positive pre-season that has seen four wins in six matches has been Montanier's use of a flat back four.

The four players the French man has put his faith in have been Danny Fox, Thomas Lam, Matt Mills, and Eric Lichaj. If Montanier can get his defence in good shape from the first kick then he is a 20 goal-a-season striker away from potentially having a side that can shock and challenge for the play-offs. Step up Britt!
