All eyes will be on the Championship this Saturday as the new 2016/17 season kicks off and one of the stand-out games will be played at St. Andrew's, where Birmingham host Cardiff City in a 3pm kick off.

The Blues will be looking to get their season off to a positive start at home as they aim to improve on their 10th placed finish last season.

The Bluebirds will be hoping to begin life under new head coach Paul Trollope with a victory.

This game is being contested by two teams that many are tipping to have a big push at the play-offs this season.

The two clubs came close last season and have made changes as they look to improve their squads for the coming campaign.

Football League World writer Steve Day casts his eye over what to look out for as two of the more experienced Championship sides go head-to-head this weekend.

Striker problems solved?

One of the areas of concern for both Birmingham and Cardiff last season was the lack of a potent goal scorer.

Gary Rowett's side only managed to score 53 goals in 46 league matches last season as their inability to convert their chances hit their hopes of reaching the top six.

The Bluebirds were so short on fire power that they reverted to playing midfielder Anthony Pilkington as a lone striker.

The top scorers for the two clubs were Clayton Donaldson with 11 league goals for the Birmingham and Pilkington with 9 goals for Cardiff.

It is an issue that needed addressing over the summer and question marks still remain over whether enough has been done to solve the problem.

Birmingham are yet to sign a new striker but have been linked with a number of potential targets such as Dundee hitman Greg Stewart and Nottingham Forest's Jamie Ward, but Cardiff have moved to sign Frederic Gounongbe from Westerlo.

It will be fascinating to see how both teams are in front of the net in this opening game.

Will the Bluebirds fly under Trollope?

Paul Trollope

It is a new era in South Wales with Paul Trollope moving from his coaching role into the big job at the club.

It was a summer to remember for Trollope as he experienced the 2016 European Championship as one of the coaching staff with Wales.

However, he has been quick to make changes at the club.

A number of arrivals and departures in the playing staff have been confirmed, Wales national team head of performance coach Ryland Morgans has joined, and the team has now adopted a new 3-5-2 formation after a season of the stale 4-4-2 under Slade last year.

The big question will be whether his changes to the club both on the pitch and off it will be felt immediately or if it will be another season of disappointment for Bluebirds fans.

It will not only be the result of this match that comes under scrutiny from the fans but also the performance.

Faith in the youth

The scrapping of the emergency loan system means clubs will need to alter their transfer policy and it could result in clubs looking to promote players from within.

Birmingham and Cardiff, with their limited transfer budgets, are two examples of that.

Birmingham already have Reece Brown expressing himself as a potential future star and there are also the talents of Josh Cogley, Luke Maxwell, and Jack Storer also knocking on the door. Cardiff have a number of prospects also pushing for first team involvement with Declan John, Tommy O'Sullivan, and David Tutonda all being considered by Trollope.

It will be interesting to see which youngsters are included in the first team squad for the opening game because it will give a big insight into how both managers will conduct their business this season.
