It has been a common theme around Coventry City in recent years and the 2015/2016 campaign starts no differently, with Sky Blues fans having no idea what to expect over the next 10 months.

It has been a turbulent few years for the long-suffering faithful at the Ricoh Arena, and many are not optimistic that the good times are just around the corner.

Having said this, for a large proportion of last season, the Sky Blues were seriously impressive, playing an attractive brand of football that also got results. However, the New Year slump and the fact that great swathes of last season’s team have now departed the club means that Tony Mowbray is basically back to square one.

However, with Coventry expected to be busy during the last month of the transfer window, and although no-one knows what Mowbray’s first XI will look like by September, the experienced manager does have a certain blueprint for the way he likes his teams to play.

Here, FootballLeagueWorld writer Tom Percival identifies THREE things to expect from Mowbray’s side, and the club as a whole this season...

1) Fast, attacking wing play

Although the Coventry squad is woefully lacking at present, one area where they do look relatively strong is out wide.

Jodi Jones is a player that really caught the eye at the back end of last season on loan from Dagenham and Redbridge, and has signed up permanently on a four-year deal. If he can continue to show the same level of ability, Jones could be one of the standout players in the division this season.

On the other side, Kyel Reid is a shrewd piece of business at this level, having had a great deal of experience at this level.

With both players possessing a great deal of pace and skill, and with Ruben Lameiras in reserve, the Sky Blues will be a handful for many sides this season.

2) Defensive frailties

Coventry struggled at the back end of last campaign for clean sheets and cutting out the conceding of avoidable goals, and ultimately it was one of the factors that cost them promotion.

The loss of Reda Johnson hit them hard, and they are still yet to find a replacement for him over the summer.

Add to this the loss of Aaron Martin, Jack Stephens returning to Southampton and Chris Stokes ruled out injured for a number of months, and the Sky Blues backline looks worryingly weak.

There is no doubt that Mowbray will add a number of bodies to it over the coming weeks, but whether it will be enough to build a solid backline capable of securing a promotion push remains to be seen.

3) Off-field issues

You certainly cannot guarantee results as a Coventry City fan, but if there’s one thing you can be sure of, it is off-field issues being a constant threat to worry you about the very existence of the football club.

At the time of writing, the Coventry City academy, which has produced the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Callum Wilson and James Maddison, looks set to be shut down, a hammer blow for a club that relies so heavily on academy products.

It is more bad news for Coventry City fans, who have been all too accustomed to receiving such news in recent years.

It is hoped for that Mowbray can produce a successful product on the pitch that will help distract from the worries of the long term future of the club off it, but there is always a dark cloud hanging over the head of Coventry City fans.
