Sheffield Wednesday picked up from where they left off from last season after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Hillsborough over the weekend.

A neat Fernando Forestieri finish sealed the points for Wednesday on the opening weekend of the Championship, after a mistake from Villa’s debutant goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini put the Italian in on goal.

That victory puts Wednesday in the driving seat for another promotion push this season, and they have a side certainly capable of competing for a place in the top-flight.

They have made some good signings such as Steven Fletcher, Almen Abdi and Daniel Pudil that will help the side significantly aim for a top six place.

Another bonus is that they have kept some of their star players from last season and Wednesday fans can be excited for the 2016/2017 season.

Football League World Writer, Ashley Williams identifies THREE things that you can expect from Sheffield Wednesday this season..

Top six finish

The side has certainly shown that they can compete with the reputable sides in the league, and the ambition will certainly be another top six finish.

Carlos Carvahal has done unbelievably well during his reign at Wednesday and things can only get better up north.

There seems to be a solid strength in depth for the squad ahead of a long season and it seems inevitable that they will compete for the play offs for a consecutive year.

Forestieri to get even better

The Italian forward was a revelation at Hillsborough last season, and his development under Carvahal looks to inevitably excel further.

Forestieri enjoyed an outstanding 2015/2016 with the Owls netting 15 goals in 38 appearances and helped them to the play off final at Wembley Stadium in May.

His efforts were rewarded after scooping the club’s player of the year award.

After only one game, he has already proved that he can cause problems against sides like Aston Villa and I feel that Forestieri has not hit his peak level yet.

Fletcher signing pivotal

The club should be expecting big things from the Scottish striker, who is capable of providing 20+ goals for the Owls this season.

The signing was a real bargain for the club, who was released from Sunderland in the summer and the coup underlines the Owls ambition to make it back into the Premier League.

The club have a frightening goal threat with Fernando Forestieri and Gary Hooper all capable of netting double figures.

The signing could be one of the best deals in the Championship this year.
