Following their relegation from the Championship last season, Ipswich Town have made a very promising start to life in League One.

The Tractor Boys are currently top of the third tier on goal difference, with a game in hand on second-placed Wycombe Wanderers.

Paul Lambert's side have won nine out of their 14 league matches and also boast the best defensive record in the division.

There's still a long way to go, but Ipswich's start the season has given fans at Portman Road every reason to be optimistic about their chances of an immediate return to the Championship.

However, despite their positive start to the current campaign, plenty of Ipswich fans will tell you that they've had their fair share of ups and downs in recent years.

On Halloween, we take a look at THREE things that will still haunt Ipswich fans...

Relegation from the Championship last season

Ipswich finished finished bottom of the Championship last season and were relegated to the third tier for the first time since 1957. After a poor start to the campaign, manager Paul Hurst was sacked in October, with his side having won just once all season.

Lambert took charge at Portman Road just a couple of days later, but he was unable to turn the club's fortunes around and in the end their relegation was something of an inevitability.

Town's 17-year stay in the second tier finally came to an end in with a 1-1 draw with Birmingham in April, as they became the first side to be relegated from the EFL last season.

It was a terrible campaign for Ipswich fans, who saw their team pick up just five league wins all season. It was made even harder to take by the fact that bitter rivals Norwich City were promoted to the Premier League as champions.

Play-off defeat to Norwich

Ipswich secured their place in the Championship play-offs on the final day of the 2014/15 season. However, their 3-2 defeat to Blackburn Rovers on the final day of the campaign meant that they ended up facing rivals Norwich City.

Still, a promising season had Ipswich fans dreaming of a return to the Premier League for the first time since 2002, but in the end they suffered heartache against their rivals.

After a 1-1 draw in the first leg at Portman Road, ten-man Town were beaten 3-1 at Carrow Road in the second leg.

Norwich went on to win promotion that season, beating Middlesbrough 2-0 in the final at Wembley, while Ipswich fans were left wondering what might have been.

5-1 humiliation against Norwich

Ipswich suffered more frustration against Norwich in the Championship in 2010/11, when the Carnies ran riot at Portman Road and took another step towards back-to-back promotions.

It was a lacklustre display from Paul Jewell's Ipswich side and a bitter pill for Town fans to sallow - having seen their side beaten 4-1 by Norwich at Carrow Road earlier in the campaign.

Norwich went on to win automatic promotion that season and did the double of their rivals for the first time since 2003/04, while Town ended up finishing mid-table.
