New Nottingham Forest head coach Philippe Montanier is earning himself lots of plaudits at the East Midlands-based club, with an attacking style of football and a charismatic personality.

The Frenchman arrived at the City Ground in July and eleven new signings have seen him stamp his own authority on the Nottingham Forest team, with several others departing the club to make way for his own recruits.

A promising start to the campaign has seen the Reds win three, draw two and lose two during the first seven games, with the three wins all coming on home turf.

Montanier is Forest’s first ever foreign head coach and the change in style on the pitch has been a breath of fresh air, with the attacking style delighting the club’s supporters who have been used to a more reserved style over the past few years.

Football League World writer and resident Nottingham Forest supporter takes a look at three things that Philippe Montanier is currently getting right at the City Ground.

Playing the youth

When Philippe Montanier selected his first competitive Nottingham Forest XI, for the opening game of the season against Burton Albion, it featured no fewer than five players who had graduated through the club’s youth academy.

The Forest faithful enjoy seeing a player make the step-up from the youth team to play first-team football and the head coach’s bold move on the opening day of the campaign earned rave reviews from the club’s fans.

A manager who puts his trust in the younger players is great to see and although Oliver Burke was sold early into his Nottingham Forest career, the future still looks bright for the Reds.

Attack, attack, attack!

One thing that previous boss Dougie Freedman was guilty of during his time at Forest was setting his side up not to lose, which ensured a mind numbingly boring style of football.

Although the Reds did go on a run of 14 games without loss under Freedman, the football was boring and ensured a lot of drawn matches.

Montanier has stated his intention to go on the attack in every game and the Reds are already among the top scorers in the Championship after seven games, with the club’s fans already relishing his style of football.

Not making excuses

The French head coach hasn’t exactly been dealt a great hand when it comes to injuries during the season’s first handful of games, with Britt Assombalonga, Chris Cohen and several others all missing large parts of the campaign so far.

Unlike some of the club’s manager’s of the past however, Montanier has simply gone about his business and refused to use the injuries as an excuse following disappointing results.

The club took the lead after 84 minutes in midweek at Rotherham and with the Millers equalising after 87, it would have been easy for the Frenchman to lament a series of absentees following the game. Instead, he boasted that his squad was strong enough anyway and they should have seen the game out, in a refreshingly honest comment.
