Cardiff City suffered a further setback in their play-off bid yesterday evening as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in the Welsh capital.

Neil Harris would have been seeking a response from his side following their miserable 2-0 defeat against Stoke over the weekend, but Tiago Silva's 49th-minute effort condemned the Bluebirds to back-to-back defeats for the first time under Harris.

The Reds' victory also meant they became just the second side to have claimed three points at the Cardiff City Stadium this campaign, with Cardiff now in disarray having seen their slim play-off hopes reduced even further in recent matches.

The south Wales outfit are now sitting 10th in the Championship table with just 11 matches remaining this term, and Harris' men will now need to overturn a six-point gap between themselves and sixth-placed Preston in order to achieve a play-off spot.

Here, we take a look at three things that Harris will have learned about his side during the Forest clash...

Lee Tomlin's injury has derailed Cardiff's season

Many Cardiff supporters would have certainly feared the worst when Tomlin was ruled out for between six and eight weeks with a knee injury, and the Bluebirds' defeat to Forest was the latest example of how much they suffer without Tomlin in the side.

The 31-year-old has been depended on by the Bluebirds for his creativity and vision in the final third this campaign, but none of his team-mates were able to step up in his absence last night as Cardiff lacked composure and incision in and around the box.

It does not come as a coincidence that Cardiff have now failed to find the net in both of their matches without Tomlin pulling the strings, and the midfielder's injury could have a serious impact on the Welsh side's season if nobody steps up to fill his void.

Robert Glatzel is starting to prove himself in attack

Glatzel was overlooked by Harris for four straight matches before the Stoke clash over the weekend, but the frontman was introduced from the bench at the bet365 Stadium before he was handed a spot back in the starting line-up against Forest.

The 26-year-old may not have helped his side unlock an organised Forest defence at the Cardiff City Stadium, but he still managed to produce one of his best performances in a blue jersey as he offered a menacing presence in the Bluebirds' attack.

The German's overall game play means there is plenty to like about him whenever he is involved for the Welsh side, but he just needs to improve his presence in front of goal in order to really kick on between now and the end of the season.

The Bluebirds have missed Joe Ralls a lot

Ralls made just his third league appearance under Harris when he was introduced from the bench against the Reds, with the midfielder being handed 19 minutes on the pitch as he looks to build his fitness before returning to the starting line-up.

The 26-year-old delivered a typically assured display in the centre of the park for the Bluebirds with Ralls showcasing his excellent passing range, while he also strived to set up a number of Cardiff attacks as they chased an equaliser.

The midfielder was ultimately unable to inspire his side towards stealing a point against the Reds, but Harris will know Ralls can have a larger influence on games if he is given more minutes, and this is something to be expected over the coming matches.
