Brentford were defeated 2-1 by Luton Town on Tuesday night, in a result that is a blow to their automatic promotion hopes.

It was a disappointing performance from Thomas Frank's side, who failed to get going throughout the fixture and lacked their usual passing rhythm.

Here are THREE things Frank will have learned from the defeat at Kenilworth Road...

They've got a problem with set-pieces

Brentford struggled massively with Luton's set-pieces and both of the Hatters' goals came from crosses into the box from free-kicks. It will be massively disappointing for Frank to have seen his side concede like that. Clearly, they're still suffering from the absence of Pontus Jansson.

It is something they have to improve on otherwise teams will target them in that area. Goalkeeper David Raya also needs to be more reluctant to punch the ball unless he's sure he can make the right contact.

They need to be able to mix it up

The Bees have to know how to mix it up. Brentford have had some great performances in the past months and can do a lot of damage with their quick, passing style but when a team sits back they have to know how to change it up and perhaps go more direct.

Said Benrahma and Bryan Mbuemo couldn't work their normal magic and Ollie Watkins had to come deep if he wanted possession of the ball. It could turn out to be a good thing for Frank as he would have seen where improvements are needed ahead of the run-in.

There remain some questions over the midfield in physical battles

Brentford's midfield lost the physical battle last night. Shandon Baptiste failed to show that he was the man to dominate the midfield. Like all Brentford players, he can pass well and often keeps the ball but he didn't physically impose himself on the Hatters and their midfield.

The Bees midfield was easy to deal with and as they're a side at the bottom, Luton needed to be put under more pressure right from the get-go. It will be interesting to see what team Frank picks for what is expected to be another physical battle at Cardiff City on Saturday.
