Huddersfield fans have been in dream land after their side's impressive start to the season that currently sees them top the Championship table with 16 points from their opening 7 games of the season.

The club suffered their first defeat of the season on Tuesday night with a narrow 1-0 loss away to Brighton but it is a defeat that will do little to dampen the positive mood that surrounds the Terriers at the moment with the club still one point ahead of second-placed Newcastle.

Head coach David Wagner has done a tremendous job over the summer of evolving the team from perennial relegation battlers to table-toppers and with so much being revolutionized by the former Borussia Dortmund coach at the John Smith's Stadium it is hard to pin-point where things have improved the most for the Yorkshire club.

Here, Football League World writer Steve Day picks out the THREE main things that Wagner is getting right at Huddersfield so far this season.

Masterminding a German revolution

Questions were raised when Wagner focused a large amount of his attention during the summer transfer window on signings from the German domestic league. German players have an inconsistent track record of delivering the goods in the Championship and it was clear that Wagner was gambling on them doing the business for his Terriers side.

A number of signings such as Elias Kachunga from FC Ingolstadt, Chris Lowe from Kaiserslautern, Christopher Schindler from 1860 Munich, and Michael Hefele from Dynamo Dresden have played key roles in Huddersfield's season so far and it appears the gamble is paying off.

It remains to be seen if the players can keep up this positive start to the campaign but the early signs are positive and with the German league experiencing the same sort of climate as the English league it suggests that they will not be put off by the cold and wet conditions that winter brings. In fact, they may well be more suited to those conditions than many anticipate.

Exploiting the loan market

Kasey Palmer

It is no secret that Huddersfield are not exactly plush with cash this season. As teams in the Championship have spent more money on new signings than ever before it has been refreshing to see a side that has done its business on a budget competing with those teams.

One of the key reasons for Huddersfield being able to improve their squad without spending dearly has been bringing in free transfers but also signing players of quality on loan which has enabled them to add strength in depth without spending a fortune.

Goalkeeper Danny Ward from Liverpool, central midfielder Aaron Mooy from Manchester City, attacking midfielder Kasey Palmer from Chelsea, and Kachunga from FC Ingolstadt have formed the spine of this Terriers team and all were brought to the club on loan.

Instilling a hard working mentality

Wagner was Borussia Dortmund II head coach between 2011 and 2015 working closely with former Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp. Klopp built his successful Dortmund side around a mentality of working hard and pressing fast. It worked wonders for his side then and it is showing a degree of success with his Liverpool side now.

It is a philosophy that Wagner clearly believes in and has looked to instill in his Huddersfield side. Wagner himself stated that his club's 2-1 win over Barnsley back on Saturday 20th August was purely down to hard work.

The dark side of this was the horrendous tackle Mooy put in on Liam Bridcutt in his side's 1-0 win over local rivals Leeds. Mooy only received a booking and he went on to score the winning goal of the game but the tackle emphasized the commitment and relentlessness the Terriers now possess under Wagner. It is a steely determination that is showing no sign of going away.
