Carlos Carvalhal has done an excellent job since taking over at Hillsborough last season, transforming Sheffield Wednesday from a mid-table Sky Bet Championship side to promotion contenders.

He was backed well in the transfer market by wealthy chairman Dejphon Chansiri, bringing in talented players such as Fernando Forestieri, Gary Hooper and Barry Bannan, all of whom have hit the ground running.

Wednesday had an excellent season last time out, finishing in the play-offs, but lost the final 1-0 against Hull City.

Carvalhal is hoping to take them one step further this season, and brought in experienced striker Steven Fletcher to help them do this, as well as other creative players like Almen Abdi, David Jones and Adam Reach.

Already backed by a good core to the squad, like Kieren Westwood in goal and crucial partnerships in defence between Tom Lees and Sam Hutchinson, the squad is now even better.

Despite a rocky start to the season, which saw them beaten by Burton Albion and Leeds United, they are back on track with two straight home wins over Bristol City and Wigan Athletic.

They do look frail at the back though, and here FootballLeagueWorld writer Michael Hasan identifies THREE things that Carvalhal has got wrong so far this season...

Almen Abdi

The main problem Carvalhal has had so far is not getting the best out of his new signings, with Almen Abdi being a prime example.

Abdi was outstanding for Watford in the Championship when they got promoted, usually playing behind Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo as he has good passing and vision.

Carvalhal is playing him on the left-wing for some unknown reason, not only limiting the range Abdi has to his game but also preventing a talented winger like Adam Reach from playing regularly.

It would be wiser for Carvalhal to play Forestieri or Reach on the left-wing, and place Abdi in the CAM position behind the main striker, who is either Gary Hooper or Steven Fletcher.

Too much tinkering

Carvalhal has been playing around with the team a bit much this season, with fans especially critical of the changes he made for the Bristol City game.

Resting Forestieri and changing the midfield around nearly cost them the game as they went 2-0 down but, after these players were brought on, it inspired a comeback.

He did the same in the 3-1 defeat to Burton Albion - not playing Forestieri and playing Jose Semedo at the back instead of the regular partnership.

Not getting more defensive cover in seems a bit of a mistake as well.

Playing Jack Hunt

Jack Hunt has been decent for Wednesday over recent years, but Liam Palmer has been out-performing him and deserves a longer run in the team.

The 24-year-old has played for Scotland at youth levels and has made well over 100 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday now.

Hunt has been inconsistent and very poor defensively, and this has cost Wednesday on numerous occasions, like in their 3-1 defeat at Burton.

Palmer has improved going forward and is better defensively than Hunt is.
