Newcastle United are flying high in the Championship and look set to cruise to the Championship title.

It seems like people are already discussing how many points Newcastle will win the league by rather than whether they'll be promoted.

And while that sounds dangerously complacent, it is hard to look past them when considering who will become champions of the second tier.

Newcastle, under the guidance of experienced Spaniard Rafael Benitez, look set to bounce straight back to the Premier League and return a better, more organised and more confident outfit when they get back.

North East rivals Sunderland - on the other hand - have had a terrible start to the season and while they have picked up recently with back-to-back wins, they are still being widely tipped for relegation.

It seems as if a North East switch is inevitable and some players might be tempted to cross the divide for their long-term Premier League future.

This is what Jack Colback did and others might follow in his footsteps; here are 3 who would be ideal captures for Newcastle.

Jack Rodwell

If Jack Rodwell crossed the divide and joined Newcastle, he would provide tough competition for Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden and Jack Colback in central midfield.

The thrice-capped England international is a box-to-box midfielder who has lost his way somewhat since promising to become an England regular when he was a youngster at Everton.

The 25-year-old is still a very good player both defensively and in an attacking sense so he would add dynamism to the Newcastle midfield ranks.

Joel Asoro

Sunderland youngster Joel Asoro has been tracked a lot by Newcastle and he might fancy it as the best short-term and long-term solution.

The 17-year-old is a striker or a winger who has already played a couple of times for Sunderland and might get a few more chances if he was to join Championship side Newcastle.

The Sweden under-21 international is a name to remember for the future and he could harness his talent under the expert guidance of Rafael Benitez.

Duncan Watmore

Sunderland are handing more game time to Duncan Watmore but a move to Newcastle would see him competing with Matt Ritchie, Christian Atsu and Yoan Gouffran for a place in the first team.

The Championship would be a good learning curve for the England under-21 international and then he would be playing in the Premier League next year, which looks more of a certainty than Sunderland's future fate.

The 22-year-old is a goalscoring winger, who can also play up front, and he is often commended for his terrific work rate, energy and resilience.
