It was a weekend to forget for Sunderland as their promotion hopes took a hit.

Sunday saw the Black Cats fall to a 1-0 defeat against Coventry City - a result which saw their five-match unbeaten run brought to an abrupt end.

As well as stopping Phil Parkinson's side from moving into the automatic promotion spots, it saw the Sky Blues extend their buffer on the play-off spots to five points with a game in hand.

That means that Sunderland's hopes of reaching the automatic promotion places has taken a real blow.

Parkinson has been remarkably consistent with his team selection since the turn of the year, however with just one point from a possible six this weeks it may be time for him to shuffle the pack for Saturday's victory over Gillingham Town.

But who could come into the? Here are three players who could be chomping at the bit for the clash at the Stadium Of Light.

Josh Scowen

He's waited patiently in the wings since arriving from Queens Park Rangers, but the midfielder is now really to be thrown into the action.

Scowen is a proper battler in the middle of the park and could be a real asset for Sunderland as they look to get a grip on the next batch of fixtures by returning to winning ways.

It would likely be George Dobson who he replaced, and while this might hamper the side's play moving forward, it would certainly ensure that they aren't overrun in midfield.

Antoine Semenyo

He's shown glimpses of quality in his cameo appearances so far and now is the time for the youngster to be given a proper go.

Lynden Gooch and Charlie Wyke have blown hot and cold at times this term and the fresh legs and work rate of Semenyo could be just what's needed to freshen things up in attack.

Gillingham could be the perfect test to throw him in - especially with the Black Cats odds on favourites to get the three points.

Do you know where these 15 Sunderland players were signed from? Have a go!

Kyle Lafferty

Similar to Semenyo, the experienced striker is another who is deserving of an opportunity.

While Charlie Wyke has been much-improved of late, he has struggled in certain fixtures as he fails to get a real grip on the defensive line.

Lafferty is a real force in attack and deserves to be given the chance to show what he can do.
