Aston Villa's capture of Tyrone Mings saw them fight off significant interest from other Championship clubs.

The powerful defender has started life well in the Championship for his new club, despite the recent stamping controversy. He's been one of the shining lights in a tough time for Villa, even coming out of the 2-0 defeat against West Brom with some credit.

There's no option to buy at the end of his loan deal though, which leaves Villa in a tough position. If he does well, they're locked in a battle with other clubs to sign him. If he flops, then they wouldn't want him anyway.

Bournemouth have clearly loaned him out for vital minutes but if he gets a taste of first team football, he's sure to want more. It could leave Villa out of the hunt for his signature.

If that happens, they're going to need to turn elsewhere for a replacement. Here's three players we think they should target if Mings doesn't sign in the summer.

Like Mings, Cooper is a no-nonsense defender with a tough streak. He's Championship experienced too, proving with Millwall he can mix it at this level.

If they continue to feature in the bottom six or seven, he's got a big decision to make. In order to kick on he'll need a new club and Aston Villa might just be the springboard he needs to reach the next level.

Clarke is possibly the best centre half in League One, but as Portsmouth fall away from the promotion race, he might be considering his options.

He's young enough to make the leap and talented enough to settle at Aston Villa. He's a player looking increasingly likely to make the step up and if he does, he'd be perfect for Dean Smith's side.

The Brentford man is well-known to Dean Smith and that has to be a factor in adding him to the list. He's an able-bodied defender with lots of experience at this level and he's slot nicely into the Villa back four.

That previous relationship would be a big help too, he understands Smith's methods and would give him a general in the dressing room.
