Middlesbrough return to the Championship, after just one season in the Premier League.

The North-East outfit, were highly successful last time they were in the division, with then manager Aitor Karanka leading them to second place and securing automatic promotion.

Heading into the Premier League campaign, their first since 2008/2009, the Boro supporters would have been hoping that the team were able to be competitive, and ultimately stay up in English football's top flight.

After struggling for form throughout the season, the club and Aitor Karanka parted company in March, following a 10 match winless streak, with the club placing Steve Agnew in caretaker charge.

Unfortunately, the change in personnel didn't help the team as they were relegated following a dismal 3-0 defeat away at Chelsea in May.

Boro simply didn't win enough games in the Premier League, as they only managed five victories throughout the campaign, and also struggled in front of goal as they could only muster up 27 goals all season.

Following the close of the season, the club turned to former Leeds and Swansea manager Gary Monk to take charge of the first team, and with the summer transfer window upon us, Monk will be looking to recruit some of his own players.

With the lack of goals in mind, Monk should turn his attentions to Leeds striker Chris Wood and Burnley's George Boyd, as well as Nottingham Forest's Britt Assombalonga.

Chris Wood

Having worked with Gary Monk at Leeds United this season and finishing top of the goal scoring charts in the Championship with 27 goals, the New Zealand international would be the perfect solution to Middlesbrough's lack of power up front.

It's clear to see that scoring the most goals in the Championship this season, Gary Monk certainly knows how to get the best out of Wood, and the link up again could really help Middlesborough make a push for an immediate return to the Premier League next campaign.

George Boyd

After rejecting a new contract at Burnley, it's looking more than likely that Boyd will leave Turf Moor this summer. With plenty of clubs rumoured to be after the Scottish international, Boro would have to move quickly to secure his signature.

Boyd, who can play as a striker or a winger, offers versatility in his game, something which could be good for Middlesbrough as it would give them options.

Best known for his time at Peterborough United, where he scored over 60 goals, Boyd is a hardworking player that also has goals in his locker.

Britt Assombalonga

The Nottingham Forest striker helped them to Championship safety this term, scoring twice on the final day of the season against Ipswich.

Assombalonga, also finished Nottingham Forest highest goalscorer this campaign as he found the back of the net on 14 occasions.

Wherever he has played he has always found the back of the net, and brings with him good Football League experience, having played at Southend United and Peterborough respectively.

Middlesbrough fans… Would Assombalonga, Boyd and Wood be good signings? Could they make the difference next season? Let us know your thoughts!
