Aston Villa ran out comfortable winners against Wolves in the highly anticipated West Midlands derby over the weekend.

Steve Bruce’s men won 4-1 with goals from Albert Adomah, James Chester, Lewis Grabban and Birkir Bjarnason securing the emphatic result.

Whilst Wolves can justifiably point to several poor decisions from the officials that made the margin of victory flattering, there’s no doubt that the home side deserved the win.

After an even first-half, they played with much more intensity after the break and that was evident in the performance of both number nines.

As our graphic shows, Leo Bonatini didn’t ever look like ending his worrying drought in front of goal. The Brazilian hasn’t scored since December 4 and only managed one shot at Villa Park in the 90 minutes.

Whereas, the in-form Lewis Grabban was a real handful for Wolves.

He got the vital goal that gave Villa a two-goal cushion and gave the hosts a real outlet up top and presence in the box that the leaders lacked.

Even though Bonatini made more passes, they were usually the safe options after he dropped deep to get the ball.

It was a massive game on Saturday that could have a serious say in who wins promotion, yet Wolves were timid and toothless, particularly Bonatini.

The same could not be said for Aston Villa and Grabban who are now closing the gap on their rivals.
