Sheffield Wednesday are currently stuttering in their pursuit of the Championship play-offs this season and could do with a few fresh faces in January.

The Owls have seen a lot of changes this season for their backroom staff, with Steve Bruce leaving just before the start of the season, for Garry Monk to take over in September after Lee Bullen’s stint as caretaker manager.

The side have benefitted since Monk’s appointment, pushing closer and closer to the promotion picture, but inconsistencies have seen them not quite consolidate their place in the top six.

With just one win in their last five league games and four defeats, Wednesday have dropped to tenth following their 5-0 thumping at the hands of Blackburn Rovers on Saturday. However, they do remain well within the race for promotion as they sit three points off the play-off places.

The January transfer window provides Monk with his first opportunity to strengthen the side since joining, and he will be keen to add some fresh faces and move players on to mould his squad better for a push in the back end of the season.

Here, we take a look at three transfer scenarios that are worth looking out for at Hillsborough from now until the end of the window…

A move for Connor Wickham

The Owls have been strongly linked for a move for Crystal Palace striker Connor Wickham this month and there is a strong chance that Roy Hodgson will be willing to let him leave this month, especially after bringing in Everton striker Cenk Tosun on-loan.

Hodgson opened up on Wickham’s current situation and indicated that a move away could be the best option for the forward for the rest of the season, given that he is not guaranteed regular outings at Selhurst Park at the moment.

Wednesday have been strongly linked with a move for the forward and Hodgson’s latest admission should ring alarm bells to those at Hillsborough wanting the move to materialise, knowing that the Premier League side are more than willing to part ways with him.

Jordan Rhodes on the move?

Ever since leaving Blackburn Rovers, Jordan Rhodes has struggled to find any consistent form and moving to Sheffield Wednesday has been no different for the Scotland international.

Having been exiled from the side at the start of the season, Rhodes made an emphatic return to the starting lineup with a hat-trick at the back end of 2019 against Nottingham Forest but hasn’t scored another goal before or after that this term.

Wigan Athletic have been strongly linked with a move for the striker, but Wednesday recently turned down a loan move from the Latics to take him until the end of the season. However, if Wednesday get a striker in, then we could well see a late move from Wigan to bring Rhodes in.

Moses Odubajo being moved on?

The former Brentford right-back only arrived in the summer but could be already on his way out of Hillsborough after not really hitting the ground running under Garry Monk, culminating in a red card away to Derby County, costing the Owls a precious win at Pride Park.

Odubajo hasn’t played for the club since then, which has coincided with the emergence of youngster Osaze Urhoghide who was immense at the right side of defence against both Brighton and Leeds recently.

The Sheffield Star are reporting that Odubajo has been told he is free to leave the club this season after not making an impact so far, and would definitely be a solid addition for a number of Championship clubs, given his solid performances for both Brentford and Hull City in the past.
