Things finally seem to be falling into place for Sheffield United in the third tier after a lengthy stay in League One.

Chris Wilder appears to have steadied the ship after a shaky start and the Blades are well positioned to win promotion back to the second tier.

After a solid summer of recruitment, Wilder has been active in the January window too.

The permanent arrivals of Samir Carruthers and Daniel Lafferty, as well as the loan signing of Manchester United's Joe Riley and the loan extension of Ethan Ebanks-Landell has indicated that Sheffield United mean business.

Add the imminent arrival of experienced Bradford striker James Hanson to their January business and it has been a successful month.

Sheffield United currently top the table but with Scunthorpe and Bolton hot on their trail, they will be keen to strengthen further.

This means fringe players are pushed further aside and here are 3 who need to leave for their own sake.

Marc McNulty

Marc McNulty has recently been recalled by Sheffield United after spending a period on loan at Bradford this season.

The Scottish striker is way down the pecking order in Wilder's books so he should move on for his own sake.

At the age of 24, he wants to be playing regularly for a permanent club.

George Long

George Long has played over 100 games for Sheffield United despite still only being 23-years-old.

The former England under-20 international used to be a regular but he is now third choice behind Simon Moore and young sensation Aaron Ramsdale.

After Wilder said he could leave, perhaps now is the best time to end his 15 year association with his local club.

Leon Clarke

Leon Clarke was expected to be a hit when he signed in the summer as he is prolific at League One level.

However, he has failed to make the desired impact at Bramall Lane and finds himself down the pecking order.

The 31-year-old needs to move on to get regular game time at this stage of his career.
