Having narrowly missed out on promotion to the Championship last season, Portsmouth may be about to wave goodbye to one of their star players this summer.

According to the Portsmouth News, Wigan Athletic are reportedly closing in on sealing a £3m deal for Pompey winger Jamal Lowe with a switch expected to be sealed before the end of the week.

One of Portsmouth's star performers last season, the 24-year-old fired in 15 goals in League One whilst also providing eight assists and will undoubtedly be missed by the club if he does indeed move on to pastures new.

Yet in order to soften the blow of losing Lowe, it is imperative that Kenny Jackett lines up a worthy successor in the brief period of that remains in the transfer window.

Keeping this in mind, here are three replacements for Lowe that we think Pompey should be lining up...

Marcus Maddison

Unquestionably one of the most talented players in League One, Marcus Maddison produced 33 goal contributions in 46 appearances in all competitions for Peterborough United last season as the club finished seventh in the standings in May.

Although predominately a winger, the 25-year-old has also demonstrated throughout his career an ability to thrive in the central attacking midfield role when asked to by Posh.

Given just how lethal he can be in the final-third, it may be worth Pompey splashing all of the cash that they receive for Lowe on Maddison as with him in their team, they could reach new heights next season.

Lucas Akins

A seasoned performer in the third-tier, Lucas Akins has made 249 appearances during his career at this level with the previous campaign arguably being one of his very best.

Fantastic throughout the year for Burton Albion, the 30-year-old rattled in 13 goals whilst also providing seven assists as he played in a number of different roles for Nigel Clough's side.

If Portsmouth do swoop for him and he can replicate this kind of form at Fratton Park, he may turn out to be the perfect successor for Lowe.

Sean McConville

Utterly excellent for Accrington Stanley over the past two seasons, Sean McConville has played a major role in the club's resurgence under John Coleman with his 15 goals and eight assists helping them achieve a 14th place finish in League One earlier this year.

Although luring him away from the Crown Ground may prove to be difficult considering that he still has two years left to run on his existing contract, it could be worth paying a premium fee for him if he ends up being the all-important difference between promotion and another year in the third-tier in 2020.
