Last season was undoubtedly an enormous disappointment from the perspective of a Nottingham Forest fan.

After splashing significant cash during the summer transfer window, Aitor Karanka's side were expected to challenge seriously for promotion.

But, in the end, they wound up significantly adrift of the play-offs and with Martin O'Neill in charge instead, after the Spaniard had walked during the January transfer window.

However, with a full pre-season and summer window in which to hone his side, there was surely no reason O'Neill could not be the man to take them up?

Well, not quite. On Friday afternoon the bombshell was dropped that the Irishman had been sacked and replaced by former Rennes manager Sabri Lamouchi.

He led the French side into the 2017/18 Europa League and also has past experience on the International stage, managing the Ivory Coast national side to the 2014 World Cup finals.

But it is undoubtedly a risky appointment and here are THREE reasons why...

A novice

Lamouchi may have done a decent job in Ligue 1 with Rennes but does that qualify him to be a successful manager in the Championship? I don't think so.

It certainly does not rule it out. Nuno Espirito Santo had never managed in England before taking over at Wolves and that has all gone rather well.

You just get the feeling that Forest could have done with someone like Slavisa Jokanovic. Someone who can play good football but also has experience of the league.

Transfers

It is a move that once again rips up any plans the club had for the summer transfer window.

Sammy Ameobi has already arrived under the pretence that he would be working with Martin O'Neill so he will now be rather concerned.

And what of the other deals that were being discussed? It is a massive risk and could well derail their hopes of winning promotion.

Short-termist

Looking at Lamouchi's managerial history it strikes me as a move that will not bring many long-term benefits to the club.

In his two previous club jobs, only one has lasted an entire season and that was in Qatar with El-Jaish.

I could well be wrong. But Forest need a manager who is likely to be able to carry the club forward for the next three or four seasons and I seriously doubt Lamouchi is that man.
