Sunderland are looking to bounce back from their play-off final loss to Charlton last month and win promotion from League One next term.

The Black Cats, led by their impressive manager Jack Ross, are looking to add to the squad over the summer to ensure they have enough in the tank to make it over the finishing line this time around, and this weekend has seen the Black Cats linked with a move for former Man United striker, James Wilson.

Wilson has failed to build on a promising start to his career at Old Trafford and has seen loan spells with the likes of Sheffield United and Derby offer little in terms of goals and success.

He did however play regularly for Aberdeen last season in a loan spell, but Sunderland are looking now to beat the Scottish side to the signing of the 23-year-old.

However, we here at FLW have been unconvinced by Wilson's performances over the last few years, and we think it might be a bit of a risk for Sunderland if they do move for him.

With that then, we looked at THREE reasons why Sunderland should steer clear of signing James Wilson...

Where are the goals?

For a striker, Wilson's record in front of goal is abysmal in all truth.

This has to change if he is ever really going to catch the eye and fulfil the promise he initially showed at Old Trafford.

Without adding those goals, his overall game leaves a lot to be desired for a team chasing promotion like Sunderland.

Wages

For a player coming from Man United, you would have to draw the assumption that he will be on quite the hefty contract in terms of wages.

Sunderland are a League One side in their second season in the third tier, and will be looking to avoid paying big wages where they can.

Wilson will command a decent amount, regardless of how poorly he has done in recent times.

They need instant success

In Josh Maja last season, Sunderland had someone who was firing in the goals on a regular basis.

When he left, the club went out and signed Will Grigg, a player proven at that level, and although it didn't work out quite as well as Grigg might have hoped, Grigg will be fine next year.

Sunderland can't afford to give Wilson loads of time to settle in, and there are bound to be other options out their for Jack Ross.
