Sunderland are on the lookout for a new manager after sacking Phil Parkinson over the weekend, and Daniel Stendel has applied for the vacancy.

That's according to the Sunderland Echo, who confirmed that the former Barnsley boss has formally expressed his interest in the position. Stendel enjoyed great success with the Tykes, which included helping them to promotion in his first season in English football.

Although, his last spell was tough, as he left Hearts following their controversial relegation from the Scottish Premiership in the previous season.

Nevertheless, here we outline THREE reasons why he would be the ideal appointment for the Black Cats...

He's won promotion from this level

There's no getting away from it, the only priority for the new boss is to get Sunderland back to the Championship. They have the budget, the resources and the squad to do just that.

So, bringing in a manager who has done it before makes total sense. Stendel took Barnsley up, showing he can handle the pressure that comes during the run-in, whilst he knows what's required in this league.

Sunderland quiz: Are these 10 facts about the Stadium of Light true or false?

He plays attractive football

A criticism of Parkinson was the direct approach that he favoured, with the football often boring for the fans to watch.

That's not the case under Stendel. He wants his side to play high-intensity, attacking football - exactly what the support want to see.

He has the passion to unite the club

Finally, a major positive with Stendel is the passion that he shows, and it's something the fans will love.

He is a big personality, who demands a lot from the players and commits himself to the job. The Barnsley support were delighted with how Stendel took to the local area and people too.

That's what Sunderland need. Someone who will dedicate themselves to the club and buy into what they are all about.
