Sheffield Wednesday have reportedly opened talks with Morgan Fox over a potential new deal with the Owls according to The Athletic.

Fox has been impressive for the Owls in this year's league campaign, in which Wednesday have struggled to build on a strong first-half of the season.

Garry Monk's side once occupied a spot in the play-off places in the Championship table, but a run of one win in their last eight league games has seen them slide down the second-tier standings.

Fox is out of contract at the end of this season, and has previously been attracting interest from the likes of Nottingham Forest and West Brom during the January transfer window, although a move failed to materialise.

But Sheffield Wednesday are clearly not taking any chances in letting him become a free-agent in the summer, and have moved quickly in an attempt to tie him down to a new deal.

We look at THREE reasons why this is the right call by Sheffield Wednesday to open talks with Fox over a new deal.

He's a player that has shown vast improvement this season.

Fox has had his fair share critics in the past, but has silenced those doubters with a number of impressive performances for Garry Monk's side this season.

He has made 29 appearances in total for Sheffield Wednesday in all competitions this season, and will be hoping he can finish the season strongly with his contract nearing an end.

If there is any player in the Owls squad that deserves a new deal based off of consistency this season, then it's Morgan Fox.

He's clearly got something about him with other clubs interested.

It had previously been reported by TEAMtalk that Fox was attracting interest from Nottingham Forest and West Brom, which shows that he's got something about him.

Fox has been hugely impressive for the Owls this season, and is reportedly keen to play in the Premier League in the future, which seems unlikely with Sheffield Wednesday at the moment.

But you have to imagine that the club will be giving him assurances that promotion is in their plans for the future, which could tempt him to stick around at Hillsborough.

Fox could be worth more in the future.

Given that Fox is out of contract in the summer, and is already attracting interest from other clubs, Sheffield Wednesday are making the smart move in trying to tie him down to a new deal.

This gives the Owls the 'pulling power' when it comes to negotiating any deal if bids are to come in for Fox in the future.

Even if they are to move him on in the future, they'll be hoping that they can get a fee for him, which at the moment, isn't possible with the defender out of contract in the summer.
