Having steered his Blackburn Rovers side to a 15th place finish in the Championship last season, Tony Mowbray will undoubtedly be wanting to build a squad this summer which is capable of pushing on towards the play-off positions during the upcoming campaign.

However, if the Riversiders' first two signings of the transfer window are anything to go by, this could prove to be a very tough goal to achieve.

Whereas Stewart Downing may struggle to deliver the goods week-in, week-out at the age of 34, there is no guarantee that Blackburn's most recent arrival, Bradley Johnson, will hit the ground running under Mowbray.

Keeping this in mind, here are three reasons why we think Rovers could end up regretting signing the defensive midfielder...

He struggled with ill-discipline last season

Despite being a key member of Derby County's squad last season, Johnson struggles with ill-discipline resulted in him receiving nine yellow cards as well as four game suspension for violent conduct during a clash with Stoke City in November.

If he cannot control his emotions on the pitch for Blackburn during the upcoming campaign, the 32-year-old could prove to be a liability for Mowbray's side who were one of the most well behaved sides in the Championship last year, finishing fifth in the fair-play standings (via Transfermarkt).

He could struggle to adapt to Mowbray's style of play

Whereas Johnson thrived at times for a Derby outfit which adopted a possession-driven style of play last season, he may struggle to fit in at Blackburn as Mowbray's tactical approach differs slightly to Frank Lampard's.

With Rovers putting more emphasis on counter-attacking football in comparison to the Rams, the midfielder will have less opportunities to push forward at Ewood Park as he will instead have to focus more on his defensive duties.

Lewis Travis' development may be hindered by Johnson's arrival

Voted Blackburn's Young Player of the Year in April, Lewis Travis enjoyed an incredibly fruitful 2018/19 campaign for his side in which he produced a number of stunning displays in central-midfield.

Yet despite being one of the best players to emerge from the club's academy in recent years, his playing time next season could be compromised by Johnson if the former Northampton Town man claims a regular spot in Rovers' starting eleven under Mowbray.

By being forced to watch on from the sidelines, Travis' development as a player could be hindered which is the last thing that anyone associated with the club will want to see.
