It has recently been reported by the Daily Star that Preston North End are weighing up a loan swoop for Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

The Reds youngster burst onto the scene in Liverpool's Carabao Cup win over Arsenal, where he saved a penalty from Dani Ceballos which proved to be the difference between the two sides in the game.

But it seems highly unlikely that Kelleher is going to be starting regularly for Jurgen Klopp's first team on a regular basis, with Alisson and Adrian ahead of him in the pecking order at Anfield.

Alex Neil's side are currently sat top of the Championship table, and the North End boss is clearly wasting no time in lining up a list of transfer targets ahead of the New Year.

There have been recent reports linking Neil with a move to Stoke City over the weekend, but Preston have moved to distance themselves from any such rumour heading into November.

We look at THREE reasons why Preston are making the right decision in moving for Kelleher.

He's got a point to prove

Kelleher hasn't been out on loan in his career so far, but has already shown that he's willing to make the step up to first team football, after starting for Liverpool against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup.

Although he conceded five goals during the ninety minutes, he can hold his head high in what was a young Liverpool squad that came up against the Gunners.

Kelleher will be wanting to make a name for himself and senior football, and he isn't going to be getting in the Liverpool starting XI whilst Alisson and Adrian are still at the club, so it's a move that makes sense for both parties involved.

Preston need someone to challenge Rudd for his starting spot

Declan Rudd only has four clean sheets to his name in 15 appearances for North End during their league campaign, so it's clear to see that he could benefit from having some added competition for his starting spot at Deepdale.

Preston already have Connor Ripley on their books this season, but it seems as though Alex Neil isn't keen to use the shot-stopper anytime soon with the 26-year-old yet to start a league game for them.

But Kelleher could prove to be the competition that Rudd needs in the Preston team, as he is a young player that will be hungry to prove his worth out on loan.

It's a risk free move for Alex Neil's side

There will be a number of Premier League youngsters who are going to be keen to make a name for themselves in senior football as soon as possible.

Kelleher is no different, and a loan move to Deepdale would allow him to have the opportunity to train with senior players on a regular basis, which will help his development.

Even if he isn't starting consistently for Alex Neil's side, he'll still be learning a lot about how to adapt his game to the demands of first team football.

As a loan, it wouldn't cost Preston anything, so it certainly seems like a wise idea for North End to be targeting a player like Kelleher.
