The appointment of Paul Trollope last month raised sceptical views from the supporters to why they did not go for a candidate with a broader managerial experience.

The Bluebirds were linked with the likes of Steve McClaren, who has managed England and managed in the Champions League, while they were also interested in with former West Ham and Watford coach Gianfranco Zola.

Cardiff is a highly ambitious club with fans that can be extremely fickle. The supporters quickly turned on Russell Slade when they were not grinding out the right results.

However, when you look back at Trollope’s managerial record, there are more positives rather than negatives.

This will be a huge year for Cardiff, whose fans will be expecting a return to the top-flight.

Cardiff have taken a gamble on Trollope, but he will be hungry to prove his critics wrong and show that he is well and truly worthy to guide the Bluebirds back to the Premier League.

Football League World writer, Ashley Williams identifies THREE reasons why Paul Trollope can guide Cardiff City to glory this season…

Coaching success

Paul Trollope

During his spell with Bristol Rovers, he guided them to a FA trophy final in 2005 and achieved promotion from the League Two play off final the following year.

There is a huge difference from League Two to the Championship, but he has shown the desire to get his career off to a successful start and he will be desperate to do well at Cardiff.

He was also part of Wales’ coaching staff that qualified for their first major tournament in 57 years and he will be looking to take that momentum from the Welsh squad into the capital city.

Familiarity of the club

When a manager often takes charge at a new club, it takes them a while to settle in and get to know their best players.

However, the appointment of Trollope suggests that they want continuity within the squad and someone that will know the player’s strengths.

He does have a high reputation as a coach and has made a big impact during his spell as assistant manager under the helm of Russell Slade.

Trollope undertook a large amount of Cardiff’s training sessions while Slade was at the club, and he will know what makes the players tick.

Possibility of luring Welsh talent to the club

The Championship will be tougher than ever before, with the likes of Aston Villa and Newcastle United plummeting down from the Premier League.

Trollope needs at least 5-6 quality signings if he is going to compete for the top six alongside the Championship big boys.

One idea for Trollope could be to lure some of Wales’ Euro 2016 heroes to the club. Players such as Hal Robson Kanu, who scored in their 2-1 win over Slovakia would be an excellent addition and the forward is currently looking for a club.

Also Jonny Williams has shown charisma and passion during international duty and would be a excellent squad player.

Welsh players, playing club football at a native side are bound to bring passion to the capital.

It is certainly an option for Trollope and he could be plotting his future players under the nose of Chris Coleman.
