Rotherham United have had a horror start to this Championship campaign and currently find themselves sitting in 24th place, after picking up just one win in the opening fourteen league games.

Although, optimism has returned to the New York Stadium after the recent appointment of Kenny Jackett as the club's manager, and the mood around the club was given an extra boost as the signing of Peter Odemwingie was announced.

Many fans are hoping that the former Stoke City and West Brom striker can by the catalyst to the club's season, and fire in the goals needed to push the club away from the relegation zone.

This article is going to take a look at THREE reasons why Odemwingie is an astute signing by manager Kenny Jackett....

Length of deal

The Millers have snapped the frontman up on a deal until January, something which I believe will prove to be a very smart piece of business by the club.

The short term nature of the deal means that he will feel the pressure to impress and secure himself a longer deal, meaning the fans down at The New York Stadium could be seeing the best of the former Nigerian international, who undoubtedly has bags and bags of quality.

After being a free agent up until this point he will be desperate to secure himself a longer deal with the club, and not feel the pressures of being out of work again.

Top Flight Experience

At the age of 35, he will add masses and masses of experience into the ranks at the New York Stadium and not only will he be a great influence on the pitch, he will also be a great influence off it and would be able to help nurture and develop some of the younger lads around the club.

For the past six years, the 35-year-old frontman has been playing the majority of his football in the top flight of English football with the likes of Cardiff City, West Brom and Stoke City and has proven repeatedly that he has what it takes to score goals at the highest level.

His most prolific season in the top flight came back in the 2010-2011 campaign when playing for The Baggies, he made a total of 32 league appearances for the club and netted 15 goals in the process.

Approaching his final years in the game

While many would look at his age as a negative, I like to flip that opinion on it’s head and look at it as a positive.
Firstly, at the age of 35, the former Nigeria international is coming towards the end of his career and will be desperate to just play football while his body still allows him too and due to the season already being 14 games old, I'm sure he will be eager to make up for lost time. Also, Odemwingie will be desperate for that last prolific season and will be working harder than ever to ensure he gets that one last taste of glory before hanging up his boots for good.
