Nottingham Forest have enjoyed a superb start to the season and they look as though they are capable of finally competing for promotion.

As we all know, the January window can be crucial in the race to make the Premier League and it seems as though the Reds are already lining up potential additions.

That's after London Football News revealed that Sabri Lamouchi is keen on adding Chelsea's highly-rated youngster Billy Gilmour to the squad on a loan basis until the end of the season.

However, a deal won't be straightforward, with Leeds United also believed to be monitoring his situation.

Here we look at THREE reasons why Forest must beat their rivals to Gilmour's signature if he becomes available...

He brings qualities the team are currently lacking

Whilst Forest have a very good midfield, they are lacking someone who can control the game from deep.

Ben Watson and Samba Sow are both very good players but Gilmour would provide a different quality and that can be needed in certain games, with the likes of Joao Carvalho and Joe Lolley sure to appreciate having someone who can get them the ball quickly in the final third.

He can help evolve the style of play

Following on from that, if Forest continue to do well they will have to adapt the way they play.

Teams will play them, particularly at the City Ground, with a focus on counter-attacking and even thinking a point would be a good result.

And, Lamouchi's men would then have to show they can open up a deep, low-block, something they haven't had to really do just yet.

Gilmour would help on that front and he could ensure the side develop an effective way of playing when they will dominate possession.

They would be getting one over a promotion rival

Finally, it would be good for the Reds to get one over Leeds United.

Even though it's early in the campaign, most agree that the Whites are going to be in the mix for a promotion spot come May and landing a player ahead of them could give Forest an edge in the race.
