Marcelo Bielsa has a decision to make with his goalkeepers at Leeds United, with Kiko Casilla and Bailey Peacock-Farrell battling for the gloves ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

Leeds started last season with Peacock-Farrell in goal, only for Casilla to displace him from January as the Whites crashed and burnt in the race for promotion.

However, Casilla’s error in the play-off semi-final, which ultimately sparked Leeds’ collapse, led to many calling for his head this summer. In addition to that, Alan Nixon claims that Burnley are in pursuit of Peacock-Farrell.

Whilst Sevilla were reportedly in pursuit of Casilla, ABC Sevilla note that Leeds are in fact pushing Peacock-Farrell’s exit, with plans for Casilla to be Marcelo Bielsa’s No.1 again this season.

Any decision to move on Peacock-Farrell will divide the fanbase, but we explore three reasons why it is the right decision…

Casilla’s experience

Whilst Casilla made errors following his arrival at Leeds (big ones at that), he is an experienced stopper, with three Champions League medals to his name.

The 32-year-old has 10 years on Peacock-Farrell and Leeds are more likely to win promotion with someone of his ilk as the last line of defence.

He will have settled in at Leeds by the time the new season comes, and should be able to be a more reliable goalkeeper in the coming campaign.

Bielsa’s preference

Over the course of pre-season Bielsa has included Casilla in the stronger sides he’s fielded.

Whilst Leeds’ squad has been split into two groups, the one that flew out to Australia looked strongest, with Casilla involved and Peacock-Farrell left at home.

Casilla has been in the thick of things all pre-season and clearly has Bielsa’s trust, which means retaining him seems the logical choice.

There might be a better prospect at Elland Road

In 20-year-old Will Huffer, Leeds have a great prospect on their hands in the goalkeeping department.

I’m not denying Peacock-Farrell is a good goalkeeper, but Huffer could be better, which I’m sure Leeds are aware of.

Huffer could be a great understudy to Casilla and test the water in the cup games this season, should Peacock-Farrell be sold.

That way you’re offering the goalkeeper a clear route to the first-team.
