After a promising end to the season for Leeds United, most in the Yorkshire region will be wondering, what is next in this roller-coaster saga under extravagant leader Massimo Cellino.

Leeds United have always stood strong in the academy production line from the days of Smith, Woodgate, Kewell, Lennon, Delph and Milner to the new golden generation, Byram, Taylor, Phillips, Mowatt and finally possibly the most impressive Lewis Cook, who follows in the footsteps of Gareth Bale and Dele Alli after being named The Football League’s Young Player of the Year in 2016.

Zach Clough is another young talent on the Bolton Wanderers production line within the Championship, his pragmatism, goals and assists have got him many admirers within the league and beyond.

After the forward recently signed a contract in December 2015, his Bolton Wanderers side were relegated to League One from the Championship.

In a stalling and unimpressive Bolton side the Manchester born winger has been a shining light, in side that have been derived of creativity and inspiration.

Leeds United have finished the season in a strong position, unlike the Lancashire club.

United have strung together four unbeaten results and look good value for their end of the season push with a strong and very unlucky 2-2 draw against promotion chasers Hull City.

The Whites missed a penalty and had The Tigers on edge for the majority of the second half.

Could Zach Clough and Leeds United be the perfect match?

1) His creativity and pace could give LUFC a different outlet

The youngster is a born attacking midfielder, he can use his left, his right and even his head, which is unusual for someone so small.

His dynamic runs from midfield give defensive outfits across the Championship nightmares, shown by his goals for Bolton this season, the midfielder leads the goal tally for Bolton and is said to be their main asset at the Macron.

He is able to shift the team defensively to offensively in a matter of touches, his offensive capabilities bring other players into the attack, which could be beneficial to wide players such as Charlie Taylor or Gaetano Berardi.

2) His ability to pull his team to victory

His side have been derived of quality this season, somewhat like Leeds United With the likes of Chris Wood, Stuart Dallas and Mirco Antenucci spearheading the attack for The Whites it poses a far more superior threat than Bolton, however, the lack of goals and injuries has been worrying for the Yorkshiremen and with the firepower lacking in attacking options they have been forced to play defensive midfielder Lewis Cook as a winger. Something not natural or beneficial to the team or the young Leeds man.

Clough offers diversity, a man who has been compared to Gascoigne and possesses similar drive to the likes of Ross Barkley or a young Wayne Rooney.

When Bolton have been struggling this season the starlet has managed to grab himself 7 goals from midfield, quite impressive when you consider it is a tenth of their overall goal tally and that the youngster has mostly been an impact substitute.

The ability to run at defenders in the Championship is a key asset, having the raw confidence and no fear attitude is something that managers dream of.

Clough has this in abundance.

Chris Wood for instance has suffered with injury, but himself and Mirco Antenucci have struggled for help offensively with Leeds' major contributor to goals either own goals or none at all.

Clough creates space and can provide assists, something the target men have been lacking all year and something which I feel could benefit the partnership hugely.

3) The Leeds United production line and the shot at the Premier League?

Leeds United have one of the most successful production lines in the country.

With the likes of the previously mentioned talent coming through the academy it has to be attractive for a youngster if the Whites come knocking.

The host of talent Leeds have in their armoury this year will rival the likes of Manchester United or Liverpool. Cook or Wilson, Mowatt or Rashford, all of these talents have a host of International caps and have played with the best young talent in the country, something Clough would surely appreciate.

The care and guidance of the club is phenomenal. The choice the youngsters are given, the opportunity to move on IF and WHEN they are ready, referring here to Milner, Ferdinand, Kewell, Lennon for example. The shot provided to become a regular within the first team has become paramount this season as the squad is littered with mostly young academy products, perfect for Clough.

The Premier League... a distant memory for most Leeds fans, but with the promise by Cellino to essentially cut his costs via season ticket profit if United don't make the Premier League, surely the Italian will be looking to add to his arsenal to make it a Premiership outfit for next season, something Clough will look favourably on.
