It has recently been revealed by Get Reading that three first-team players have been told to find new clubs before the new season gets underway.
Chris Gunter, Sam Baldock and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson have all been told they can leave the Royals, as they look to trim the wage bill to make way for new signings.
The Sun have previously reported that Jose Gomes’ side are under a ‘soft transfer ban’ heading into the summer, which has meant that the Royals boss has been restricted in the transfer market.
Gomes successfully guided the Berkshire-based side to safety in the Championship last season, and he would have hoped to have strengthened his squad at the earliest of opportunities.
But he hasn’t been able to do that, which will certainly come as a frustration to the 48-year-old.
We look at three reasons why it’s the right decision by Gomes to move the three players on this summer.
They need to trim the wage bill
It’s no secret that Reading have been overspending in recent seasons, which will mean they are restricted in the transfer market this summer if they don’t move players on.
So it’s important that Gomes looks to trim the wage bill as soon as possible, otherwise the Royals could struggle to stay afloat in the Championship.
The players linked with moves away are likely to be on relatively high wages, so it’s a move that makes sense Reading supporters.
Gunter hasn’t been at his best in recent seasons
The Welshman is a player that has divided opinion in recent seasons, and it’s clear to see why, as he doesn’t make much of an impact going forward.
But his loyalty can’t be questioned, and he’s been a regular for the Royals in the past, although it might be time for him to move on before the new season gets underway.
He’s past his best, and Gomes evidently doesn’t rate him very highly, as he’s rarely featured since he was appointed earlier this year.
Gomes has better options available to him
Gomes hasn’t made too many changes to his Reading side since he was appointed, and that shows that a number of players don’t have a future at the club whilst he’s in charge.
Baldock and Bodvarsson are behind both youngsters Danny Loader and Yakou Meite in the pecking order, whilst Gunter is being Andy Yiadom at right-back.
So it will have been a no-brainer for Gomes to move the trio on in the summer, and he’ll be hoping they can find a new club at the earliest of opportunities.
