Newcastle United’s impressive Karl Darlow was linked with a January move to Chelsea in January, reports the Mirror.

The Premier League leaders are expected to further their interest during the summer, with current backup goalkeeper Asmir Begovic looking for regular first-team football.

Thibaut Courtois is Chelsea’s established first-choice and Begovic has been restricted to just seven appearances across all competitions this season, not many first-team minutes for a stopper of his standing.

Darlow has made 22 appearances this season for Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle side, and the Magpies would have been rather reluctant to let their No.1 leave in January, as they look for a Premier League return.

Considering their table-topping form, it's not as if the former Nottingham Forest ace will have to wait too long before making a return to the English elite.

Here we look at THREE reasons Darlow would be mad to leave Newcastle for Chelsea…

Game time

The reason Begovic is looking for a move away from Stamford Bridge is simply because he is not getting enough first-team opportunities.

This will be the same for Darlow if he was to join Chelsea.

Courtois is one of the finest goalkeepers in the world at the moment and would continue to be Antonio Conte’s first choice even if Chelsea were to secure his signature.

Darlow has played regular football for Newcastle this season, but a move to London would more than likely see his game time slashed.

Newcastle’s potential promotion

Rafa Benitez’s side are currently top of the Sky Bet Championship and look on course for a Premier League return.

Should Darlow remain at Newcastle, it is more than likely he will be playing top-flight football next season.

If Darlow was to move to Chelsea, as mentioned before he would struggle for game time, and would more than likely regret his decision if Newcastle were in the Premier League.

Age

Darlow is just 26-years old and has a long career ahead of him, with most goalkeepers playing well into their thirties.

With the age Darlow is currently at, he should be playing regular football to further his development.

A move to Chelsea could potentially restrict the goalkeeper improving.

Courtois is two-years younger than Darlow and would be likely to outstay the current Newcastle keeper if he was to move to Chelsea.
