It's no secret that Aston Villa haven't started as well as they would have liked to this season after relegation from the Premier League.

The disastrous campaign, which saw them gain just 17 points, was a real low point for the club, and things haven't exactly picked up much from there.

The summer oversaw the recruitment of a lot of new faces, with players such as Jonathan Kodjia arriving from Bristol City for a sizeable fee.

The new players are yet to have a real impact after picking up just one win from the opening 11 league matches. But they'll be hoping that they can grow into their new team and hit a good run of form after the international break.

Here, FootballLeagueWorld writer Tom Rawcliffe identifies THREE reasons why Jonathon Kodjia could be the main man for Aston Villa...

Departure of Di Matteo

Under Roberto Di Matteo, Kodjia played six games where he managed the whole 90 minutes. But with just one goal in those games, he'll be disappointed with his return.

The style of play which the Italian manager played may not have suited the former SCO Angers man, but he will certainly be hoping that the new gaffer will suit him perfectly.

If the new man comes in and plays a formation and style of play which Kodjia can seamlessly slot into, then he could quite easily become Villa's main man this season.

Form last season

Kodjia arrived at Bristol City at the beginning of last season with no experience of the English game - a complete stranger to the Championship.

But you never would have known it, as the Ivorian striker took no time to acclimatise to his surroundings, firing goals in left, right, and centre.

He finished the season with a very impressive tally of 19 goals in all competitions, form which convinced the Villains that he was worth the £11 million plus fee.

If he is to get back into that vain of form, then he could yet again be a key player in the Championship season, and he could ultimately push Aston Villa up to where they want to be.

The whole package

What are the attributes of an ideal striker? Pace? Strength? Good heading ability?

Well, Kodjia seems to tick a lot of boxes.

At 6ft 2, he is a real presence in the air and will happily duel against his opposing defenders. But he will also receive the ball at his feet, use his undoubted strength to hold them off the ball, and pop a pass off to the wide men.

He will also offer you a good amount of pace at the top of the pitch which is always a useful outlet. Added with his clinical ability to finish his chances, he is a brilliant forward player who can be unplayable on his day.

If he can combine all of these attributes on a regular basis, then he will become an instant fans favourite and Villa could be on the rise once again.
