Nottingham Forest laid down a real marker in the Sky Bet Championship’s promotion race on New Year’s Day, with the Reds beating Leeds United at the City Ground.

Of course, that one result isn’t going to make Forest’s season and had there been a defeat to Leeds, it wouldn’t have spelt the end of their promotion push.

What’s more likely to do that is the transfer business they do this month, with Aitor Karanka’s squad looking like it will need a little bit of reshaping, despite such a busy summer.

According to Sky Sports’ transfer centre (03/01, 16:18), Forest are interested in Jamal Lowe at Portsmouth, but they are rivalling the likes of Leeds, West Brom and Middlesbrough for the impressive 24-year-old’s signature.

Lowe has 10 league goals to his name for Pompey this season and is undoubtedly a talent, but Forest don’t particularly need him.

Here’s a look at THREE reasons why signing him makes no sense…

There’s no other place to start.

Forest have unbelievable depth to their squad, with the Reds boasting so many attacking options.

Do they really need another?

Karanka’s job has been in doubt over the last week and that will continue whilst the Reds are out of the top-six.

Can Forest really afford to allow him to sign another player if he isn’t going to be in the club much longer?

Ultimately, Lowe is unproven at Championship level.

Yes, he’s a talent, but that’s not what Forest need this month.

If they are to be serious promotion contenders, proven players need to be bought this month, not risky signings like this would be.
