Chris Martin hit the headlines this weekend having scored the winner for Scotland in their crucial World Cup qualifying win over Slovenia on Sunday evening.

The Derby County man, who is currently serving a loan spell with promotion-chasing Fulham, has been in the news all season, having struggled to originally settle into life in London.

But he certainly delivered on the international stage this weekend, scoring a last-minute winner for Scotland as they secured arguably their biggest win of the qualifying stages so far.

It marks another stepping stone for the forward, who was booed when he came on at Hampden Park, before leaving to a heroes reception.

And turning back to club matters, new Derby County manager Gary Rowett has a lot of thinking to do when it comes to Martin's future this summer, despite some Derby fans still insisting he's not the man to lead them forward.

But here at the FLW, we think differently and here's 3 reasons why Rowett really mustn't let Martin leave the club this summer...

He's scored goals for Derby in the past

Chris Martin has scored over 60 goals for the Rams in his last three seasons and on many occasions, he's proved to be a real matchwinner at Pride Park.

Granted, his play style isn't that suited to a manger who wants to play seriously stylish and attractive football but in Gary Rowett, the Rams have a manager who is renowned for making his players work hard to really grind out results.

Should he be considering keeping a player that would have certainly worked had he played under Rowett at say Birmingham? Absolutely.

Other forwards in this side aren't exactly banging in the goals

Darren Bent and Johnny Russell are the two most senior forwards in this side and they've hardly banged in the goals for the Rams this season.

Former Villa man Bent is sitting on 12 strikes this season whilst Scottish international Johnny Russell can't get into the first-team.

Andrea Weimann is doing a real job on loan at Wolves at the moment, but he's hardly a 20-goal-a-season striker.

Keeping hold of Martin gives the side a real option going forward.

He's got years left at the top and should be hitting his prime

Martin didn't exactly set pulses racing early on in his career and having left Norwich City, he served a whole number of loan moves before his switch to Derby County was made permanent.

But now at 28, these are the years that should be really counting for Martin now and he needs to really start performing at the top level, something that is now entirely down to him moving forward.

He should be up for taking the challenge and really making a name for himself in Gary Rowett's Derby County side.
