Bristol City are currently on the hunt for a new striker, and they seem to have their eyes set on making a move for Burnley forward Nahki Wells.

Having spent the first half of the season on loan at QPR, Wells was recalled by his parent club to try and determine his long-term future at Turf Moor.

It looks as if the 29-year-old forward is set for a permanent departure from the Clarets, with Josh Brownhill rumoured to be going in the opposite direction if the Robins can pull off the deal.

Here, we take a look at three reasons why Bristol City need to seal the deal for the striker...

Need the cover

Lee Johnson and his squad have been lacking the cover up front since loanee Benik Afobe ruptured his Anterior Cruciate Ligament during training in September after starting the season on fire.

Ever since, the Robins have had to get along with just the three out-and-out strikers Famara Diedhiou, Andreas Weimann and Antoine Semenyo, with the trio not having been the most consistent this season.

If one of their strikers was to get injured or suspended without the adequate cover available, then it could be a struggle for a small period at Ashton Gate.

A born goalscorer

Bristol City's options as an out-and-out goalscorer is pretty slim, with main starters Diedhiou and Weimann not being the most prolific in front of goal, as well as backup Semenyo still awaiting his first Robins goal.

The club's strikeforce could do with a shakeup, and adding Wells to the mix would provide the midfielders somebody to slide through on goal and pick out over the top, with the striker liking to play on the shoulder of the last defender.

The Robins have been crying out for an 20-goal-a-season striker since Tammy Abraham's loan spell in 2016-2017, and Wells could finally be that man if they secured him on a permanent basis.

Semenyo can go on loan

Young striker Antoine Semenyo has found chances hard to come by, and bringing Wells in would allow the 20-year-old to blossom and head out on loan for the last few months of the campaign.

The youngster would be allowed to depart temporarily if Johnson can find another striker, with the worry of having a 'club-developed player' in the matchday squad no longer there with backup keeper Jojo Wollacott having been recalled from his loan at Forest Green Rovers.

Semenyo has the potential to become a Championship-standard player if City invest the time in him and give him the minutes away from the senior squad that he needs in the short-term, with his development having stalled slightly in the past year.
