Bristol City will be looking to push for promotion again in 2019/20 and it is vital that they do everything they can to keep Adam Webster at the club this summer.

Newcastle United are reportedly one of a number of clubs interested in the central defender on the back of an excellent debut season at Ashton Gate.

Webster joined City for £3.5 million in June 2018 and while the club could likely demand much more than that if he were to leave, Lee Johnson will surely be hoping to keep him following’s Lloyd Kelly £13 million transfer to Bournemouth earlier this summer.

Given how integral Webster was to the Robins last season, we have narrowed it down to three reasons why Johnson should do everything he can to stand firm and keep him in BS3 for the upcoming season.

Check them out below...

He was City’s best player last season

City fans will have been worried when talismanic centre-back Aden Flint departed the club last summer but Webster has done more than just fill his shoes.

Solid defensively and assured with the ball at his feet, the 24-year-old was phenomenal for the Robins in the 2018/19 campaign and formed one of the best central defensive partnerships in the Championship alongside on-loan Tomas Kalas.

The quality of his performances were recognised by the club, as he won both the Bristol City Supporters’ player of the year and Senior Reds’ player of the year.

Last season’s success was built around a strong defensive unit

Last season saw the Robins improve their league position for the fourth consecutive year since their return to the Championship, finishing just four points off the top six in eighth place.

That success was built around the strength of their defensive unit, as Johnson’s side conceded the third-fewest goals in the division.

With Kelly gone and the return of Kalas and Jay Dasilva following the completion of their loans unsure, ensuring Webster is at the heart of that defensive unit for the upcoming season is vital.

Losing Webster may limit Johnson’s versatility next season

Webster was a mainstay in the City side last season, making 47 appearances in a variety of different positions.

Johnson utilised the central defender as part of a back three, back four and back five, as well as playing him in defensive midfield for a number of big games.

Webster’s athleticism and passing ability mean he is able to excel as a centre-back and a defensive midfielder, which allows Johnson the versatility to line his side up in a range of formations and switch between them in-game.
