Bradford City are on the lookout for a new manager after the club made the decision to sack Derek Adams this week.

The Bantams were expected to push for promotion under the Scotsman, but they sit 12th in the table, eight points away from the play-off places, so fans had understandably become frustrated.

A host of names have been linked with the vacancy in the past 24 hours, with Jonathan Woodgate the latest to make it clear that he would be interested in the role.

And, here we look at THREE reasons why the former England player could be a smart choice for the Yorkshire side...

He is eager to prove himself as a manager

Firstly, it's encouraging that Woodgate is putting it out there that he wants the job. That shows he is ready for the challenge and that he isn't scared to drop down the leagues despite previously working in the Championship with Middlesbrough and Bournemouth.

The 42-year-old sees this as an opportunity to get back into the game and he is a young manager who wants to have a long, successful career as a coach. To do that, he will need to be a success with Bradford, so the club would be getting someone desperate to do well.

He has experience at a higher level

As touched upon, Woodgate has worked at a higher level in his career, so he would command respect from the players instantly, which is obviously going to help.

During his playing career he played in the Premier League and for Real Madrid and England, so he knows about dealing with pressure and being successful.

As a coach, he has worked in the Championship so knows all about the Football League and he could help improve players in the squad.

He can be a long-term answer

The appointment of Adams, who won promotion with Morecambe last season, was seen as one to get the club out of this division.

However, with Woodgate they would be getting a young coach who could plan for the long-term. They've gone down the road of experienced names in the past and it hasn't worked, so why not look to the future and give someone time?

Woodgate could be the man to bring stability and success to the club over a longer period with new ideas and a different approach.
