Birmingham have made an excellent start to the season with last weekend's incredible victory over Sheffield Wednesday cementing them firmly inside the play-off places, and comfortably above rivals Aston Villa.

Gary Rowett has done an excellent job since taking over at St Andrews, transforming them from relegation candidates to play-off contenders with a solid defence and potent attack.

Goals were the major problem for them last season with Clayton Donaldson doing a lot of the leg work, and there wasn't enough back up for him so they ended up falling away.

The additions of Lukas Jutkiewicz and Greg Stewart have not resolved this as the former is in some very poor form, but they look stronger than last season.

The aim for Birmingham will be top six but the strength of the Championship means Rowett will have to add to his squad especially up front, as an injury to Clayton Donaldson would currently majorly dent play-off hopes.

Here's THREE reasons why the Blues should consider signing former Stoke player Peter Odemwingie on a free.....

Versatility

Odemwingie has shown throughout his career that he can play in several different positions and this versatility could be crucial for Birmingham's top 6 chances.

Not only can he play up front but he can play in attacking midfield as a Number 10, a winger or drop back into midfield on the right.

Birmingham do lack creativity sometimes despite the efforts of Gleeson and impressive youngster Che Adams but Odemwingie would give them far more depth.

The purchase of Che Adams allows them to play a front two, with Clayton Donaldson and the young forward has impressed since his move from Sheffield United.

Greg Stewart will more likely play in attacking midfield meaning Birmingham need more options up front.

They really only had Donaldson last year and when he hit a dry patch they fell away from the play-offs with Lafferty getting injured as well.

Whilst they are stronger than last year, Odemwingie would give them more options if Adams starts struggling at a higher level.

Birmingham have been excellent under Rowett simply because they haven't splashed the cash in order to improve, but have earned it through hard work and shrewd signings.

Birmingham's rise in a money laden league is impressive and should be admired.

Star players like Clayton Donaldson and Stephen Gleeson came on frees and Paul Caddis along with Michael Morrison were bargains.

Odemwingie is a free agent so not a gamble, but has a point to prove and will do well for the Blues.
