This weekend, Birmingham City visit Griffin Park looking to keep their good form going and cement their play-off position.

They will be visiting a Brentford side who sit 14th, having fallen to a 3-2 defeat at relegation candidates Blackburn Rovers last time out.

The Blues, unbeaten in 3, are sitting in 5th place in the Championship, with 28 points from their opening 17 games and they enjoyed a hard-fought 1-0 win over fellow promotion hopefuls Bristol City last weekend.

Meanwhile, their hosts, Brentford, have endured an up and down start to the season, and are situated firmly in a tightly packed mid-table, having amassed 22 points from their 17 matches.

Both will be looking to improve their fortunes in the table, and seeing how congested and competitive the play-off race is at the moment, it is vital that the two sides get points on the board sooner rather than later.

Birmingham go into the game as favourites, despite being the away team, and a win could potentially take them up to third, depending on other teams' results.

A loss, on the other hand, is likely to dump them out of the play-off spots with a number of clubs lining up just below the Blues, eager to leapfrog them if they slip up at all.

While it is a tough game this weekend for Gary Rowett, here are three reasons why Birmingham will come out on top.

Playing style

Gary Rowett

Under Gary Rowett, Birmingham have earned a reputation for being hard to beat and this works better away from home as well as on their own patch at St. Andrews.

They can allow Brentford to have possession, and with the pace they possess on the counter attack, they can cause the Brentford defence real problems.

Birmingham are very solid defensively and this lays the foundation for them to grind out hard-fought results.

Brentford's inconsistency

Many times this season, Brentford have pulled off some impressive results - beating QPR 2-0 at Loftus Road is just one such example of this.

However, only a few days after that impressive performance, they pulled off a shocking display at home to rivals Fulham, and the struggle for consistency will hurt them on Saturday.

The longer the home side do not breakthrough, the more frustrated the Griffin Park faithful will get.

As it has done in previous games this season, this could trouble Dean Smith's side, and will undoubtedly work to Birmingham's advantage.

Mental upper hand

Last season, after the duo flirted with the play-offs for most of the season, both had to be content with a mid-table finish.

However, the head-to-head record between the two last year makes for interesting reading, with Birmingham having done the double over the Bees last season.

This no doubt will give Gary Rowett's charges a psychological advantage, and he will drum it into his players' heads that they can come out on top once more, and more importantly that they evidently possess the quality to outdo their opponents.
