It wasn't so long ago that AFC Wimbledon were written off in League One. They were ten points adrift of safety and struggling to put a run of results together.

Thanks to their form improving significantly, they're now right in the middle of a real relegation battle. They've caught up the chasing pack and currently have 43 points from 41 matches.

That's put them 21st in the league and only goal difference is keeping them in the bottom four.

They drew with Accrington this weekend, Joe Pigott's early opener cancelled out before half time, but it was another point and another small step forward. They'll feel 51 points should be enough to see them safe, but with such a tightly-knit pack it could be fewer.

If they were to survive it would be a great escape that even the Wimbledon of old would be proud of. They've battled against the odds on smaller crowds than most and smaller budgets, but they're still right in with a chance of League One football.

Here's three reasons why we think they can pull off their own great escape this season...

Crazy Gang spirit

It's spoken about often, but the Crazy Gang were different. They made spirit and belief go further than anyone else and took the old Dons from the Southern League to winning the FA Cup.

Wally Downes was a part of that and whilst the new world dictates they can't be quite as brash as their former selves, they're certainly harnessing a belief down in Kingston.

Vital fixtures

They've got some winnable fixtures coming up, with a couple that will define their season. Oxford are first, they're seemingly safe but have been on a good run.

However, Bristol Rovers and Wycombe both have to visit Kingsmeadow and that will define the season. Win those matches against relegation rivals and they'll have a great chance.

If it goes to the final day, a trip to Bradford City, who are seemingly doomed, is as good as it gets.

Current form

Their current form is very good. In the six-match form table, the Wombles are sixth, even above leaders Luton Town.

They're finding a rhythm at just the right time and if they ride that form and the belief over the next five matches, they'll be around to fight another day next season.
