As Sunderland continue their hunt for a new manager after Jack Ross' dismissal on Tuesday, former Stoke City manager Gary Rowett has admitted he is not interested in talking to the Black Cats about the vacancy.

Sky Sports News reported on Thursday morning that Rowett would favour a move to Millwall over Wearside.

After leading Burton Albion to the League Two play-offs in his first full season in charge, Rowett left the Pirelli in 2014 and since then has managed a trio of Championship clubs.

He was arguably unfairly sacked at Birmingham City, guided Derby County to the play-offs in 2018 and had an unhappy seven months at Stoke City.

For all his Championship experience, some Sunderland fans would of been forgiven for thinking Rowett was an ideal replacement for Jack Ross.

However, after he reportedly said he wasn't interested, we take a look at why this may not all be bad news for Sunderland.

No League One experience

It may sound simple, and some may think it can't be that different, but Rowett has never managed in League One. He would inherit a squad that seems lacklustre and who so far have failed to build on last season's play-off place.

Sunderland seem to still be struggling to adapt to life in League One, unlike Ipswich Town who are flying. The Black Cats would be better off getting someone in who knows how to get out of this league.

Daniel Stendel is the bookmakers current favourite, with the German guiding Barnsley to the Championship last term. Someone who knows this division may be better of suited to the Stadium of Light hot-seat.

He may not improve Sunderland's away form

Sunderland's undoing last season was drawing too many games, this season their away form hasn't been great. They've managed two wins but could only draw against Bolton, were comfortably beaten at Peterborough United and Saturday's 2-0 loss to Lincoln was the final nail in Jack Ross' coffin.

An Achilles heel for Sunderland both this season and last season is conceding the first goal, having done so seven times already this season.

Away from home this has tended to set the tone of the match, with the Black Cats only coming from behind once to claim all three points.

Rowett's away form at Derby County in 2017-18 yielded only eight wins and his record of his time at Stoke saw just two wins on the road in 14 attempts.

He failed at his last "big" job

There can be comparisons drawn between Sunderland and Rowett's previous side, Stoke City.

Sunderland went into this season as favourites to win the League One title but have so far not lived up to expectation. Similar to Stoke City at the start of the 2018-19 Championship season.

After spending a lot of money in the summer, Rowett just couldn't seem to get the Potters going and was dismissed in January. Could the pressure of being favourite not worked in Rowett's favour?

Looking at his time at Birmingham City, who were much un-fancied, and saw an upturn in results. When his sacking was announced he left the Blues just one point outside the play-offs.

Rowett certainly would have a point to prove, however Sunderland fans may want to take these points and look forward for another candidate who would be more likely to guide their side back to the second tier.
