Barnsley are reportedly targeting a move for Blackburn Rovers midfielder Richie Smallwood according to TEAMtalk.

The report claims that the likes of Charlton, Wigan and Huddersfield Town are also interested in landing his signature this month.

Blackburn are seemingly ready to listen to offers for the 29-year-old who is out of contract at the end of this year's campaign.

Smallwood has made 87 appearances in total for Rovers, and will be keen to find regular game time with another club in the near future.

The midfielder has been restricted to just two appearances in the Carabao Cup this season, and he'll know that his future opportunities at Ewood Park are likely to be limited under Tony Mowbray.

Smallwood has previously been on the books at both Middlesbrough and Rotherham United, and it'll be a somewhat frantic end to this week for the 29-year-old, with Deadline Day approaching.

We look at THREE reasons why Smallwood would be a smart addition to the Barnsley squad in this month's transfer window.

He has experience of playing in the Championship.

Smallwood has been with Blackburn for a number of years now, and he's got a vast amount of experience in the Championship, which will be one of the main reasons as to why Barnsley are targeting him.

He made 33 appearances for Tony Mowbray's side last season, and has also played for Middlesbrough and Rotherham at this level earlier in his career.

So, the Tykes would be getting a player that wouldn't have any difficulty in adjusting to the physical demands of Championship football.

Therefore, it's a deal that makes perfect sense for Gerhard Struber's men, providing they can get this deal over the line before Deadline Day on Friday.

Any fee for this potential deal would be minimal.

Smallwood is out of contract at the end of this year's league campaign, so any potential agreement between Blackburn and Barnsley wouldn't cost a considerable amount.

The midfielder has only made two senior appearances for Rovers this season, and is likely to cut a frustrated figure at Ewood Park at the moment.

So, if he is to force a move elsewhere, then Blackburn are going to have to prepare themselves for Smallwood to depart the club for a minimal fee.

Younger players can learn from Smallwood.

Smallwood is an experienced midfielder that has consistently been playing in the Championship for the majority of his career.

Barnsley have a relatively young playing squad this season, which could be one of the main reasons as to why they're struggling to stay afloat in the second tier this term.

The likes of Luke Thomas could learn a considerable amount from a player like Smallwood, who would have both a positive impact on and off the pitch for the Tykes.
