Having suffered play-off heartbreak last month at the hands of Sunderland, Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett seems determined to get his transfer business early this summer before leading his side to another charge for promotion.

With the likes of James Bolton, Paul Downing, Ryan Williams and Ellis Harrison all joining Pompey in recent weeks, the club revealed Sean Raggett as their fifth signing of the window on Thursday.

Moving to Fratton Park on a season-long loan deal from Norwich City, the 25-year-old defender could very well end up having a profound impact on Portsmouth's fortunes over the coming 11 months.

Keeping this in mind, here are three reasons why we think Raggett's arrival is just what Pompey needed heading into the new campaign...

He is a ready-made replacement for Matt Clarke

With Clarke being one of the stand-out performers in the third tier during the previous campaign, it was always going to be tough for Portsmouth to keep hold of him this summer.

Therefore, when it was announced that the defender had joined Brighton & Hove Albion earlier this week, it was paramount that Jackett had a player lined up who could be a ready-made replacement.

Although Raggett will have big shoes to fill at Pompey during the upcoming campaign, his performances for Rotherham United last year showed a great deal of promise which if replicated next season could see him win over the trust of his new boss.

He has proven himself in the lower divisions before

Before joining Norwich in 2017, Raggett played in the National League as well as League Two for Lincoln City under Danny Cowley.

Outstanding in both divisions, the defender will be confident of repeating the feat in the third tier with Portsmouth who will be champing at the bit in August having come so close to going up last season.

He could strike up a fruitful partnership with Paul Downing

When you consider that Portsmouth now have the likes of Downing, Christian Burgess, Jack Whatmough and Raggett at their disposal for next season, it will be intriguing to see just who Jackett decides to choose as his starting central defenders for the club's opening day fixture against Shrewsbury Town.

Whereas Burgess and Whatmough competed ferociously for the position last year, Downing's wealth of experience may see him get the nod ahead of this duo, leaving one spot up for grabs.

By building a rapport with the former Blackburn Rovers ace in pre-season, Raggett could end up striking up a partnership which allows Pompey to take League One by storm.
